A tendentious claim. It’s not as if you can do comparative measurements on the amount of human suffering. I think of the mass of Iraqis who prior to the war were at least living somewhat ordered ordinary lives only to be thrown into a maelstrom of anarchy and violence.

I hadn’t heard that. That’s pretty cool. It may be boring in translation, but I don’t find it at all boring in Greek. These are the actual words the Greeks used to describe the natural world as they knew it—sandy, rocky, wooded, whatever. As such they have a kind of magic.

Well here’s a figure. According to the New York Fed numbers on household debt, in 1q 2024, 3.2% of outstanding debt was in some stage of delinquency. In 1q 2026, 4.8%. My knowledge of these things is pretty superficial, but I agree that we may not be looking in the right places.

I must disclose a conflict of interest as an occasional writer of doggerel. That said, sometimes a poem needs to be oblique, and sometimes direct. Failure on either of these points can be trouble. But as Johnson said, the difficulty with poetry is that it’s so hard to know when you’re being bad.

My vocabulary is okay (before your post I would have said excellent), but this is not a word I would have recognized out of context. So it has no associated mental image, whereas earthenware does. But I don’t consider having to look up words any bar to appreciating a poem as such.
