#Folktober movie 6: The Witch (2015). A banished Puritan family is tormented by something in the woods, and the oldest daughter bears the brunt of it. It’s beautifully shot and well acted, and solid folk horror, but it’s more a study of a collapsing family than anything really scary. It’s fine.

#Folktober movie 5: The Lair of the White Worm (1988). The discovery of a giant reptile skull brings back an ancient snake cult. Is it a good movie? No, but it’s sexy, weird, internally consistent, and most of all, fun, and that makes it a good watch. Alt. title: Doctor Who versus the Snake Woman.

#Folktober movie 4: Lord of Misrule (2023). A vicar’s daughter vanishes during the local harvest festival, and the search reveals something dark and old may be involved. This one was solid. The plot is good, the cult is slowly revealed, and the ending has a good twist on dealing with old gods.

#Folktober movie 3: The Company of Wolves (1984). A girl dreams of a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood filled with werewolves. I wish I could say this was full of fairy tale logic, but it’s more dream logic, and thus inconsistent and messy. Everything feels very false and artificial. Not great.

#Folktober movie 2: The Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971). A farmer finds an odd face while plowing, and soon a cult is plaguing the village. It’s one of the first films to be labeled “folk horror”, and I have notes. There’s the bones of a good story there, but it needs another couple of drafts to shine.

His green sensor lens is bright, like his future, and he proudly wears the number 4 of his former unit - 4 The Revolution! Blurred by distance behind him is Keiko, pointing the way.

Among the rubble and ruins, Mr Rumbles, machine gun pointing up and forward, is alert and ready to follow the mission of his friend and companion at his side, Keiko! She has her arm out, showing the way, and looks fabulous in her pink jumpsuit that matches Mr Rumbles' armour plating! She carries a sub-machine gun and wears ear defenders with extra cat ears, just like her robot buddy! You guessed it, it was Keiko that welded those ears onto the turret of the broken AFV-4 and named him Mr Rumbles after she reactivated him.

A sad Mr Rumbles tilts his turret down as he realises the mission involves yet more death and destruction. Sure, he's a top-of-the-range armoured fighting vehicle, he was built for this, and Keiko seems happy when he's all BLAM-BA-BLAM-BA-BLAM and turning the Bad Guys into meat chunks, but isn't there more to life? Keiko hasn't even noticed he's sad.
Oh well.

#FolkTober film 1: The Wicker Man (1973). A police officer from the mainland searches for a missing girl on an island with very old traditions. Excellently made, well cast, and just an intriguing watch. Are we bad for rooting against the protag and for the pagans? I don’t think so; they’re more fun.

Picked up Ghost of Yotei earlier this month, and I am enjoying the hell out of it. Absolutely beautiful, an improvement over the already-excellent Ghost of Tsushima, and @erikaishii.bsky.social is awesome in the lead role. Also, Watanabe Mode is the best for my Champloo-style lo-fi vibes.

I am done with this shit. It is over. The state of engineering right now is horrible. It has been half a month since I started a new role at a big company.
Nobody knows anything here. The specs, code, tests, PRDs, tickets, resolution of those tickets, reports, etc., everything is made by Claude Code.
Nobody on my team likes this. They are being forced to ship as much as they can. I have heard multiple times from higher management that pushing code is not a bottleneck, so why are we slow?

Got my second game of Classic #Battletech in today. 8K BV, with my Wolf’s Dragoons against my friend’s under-strength mercs led by a Marauder II. In the end, it was a draw, with one crippled mech each, but if we’d kept going that Mad II would have wrecked my face.

The final round of the battle. The silver Hunchback in the center had just been pinched to death, but the Dragoons were still on the back foot.

The state of my lance at the end. Two through-armor crits had banged up my Warhammmer pretty badly.
