Viv’s mouth opened to answer, widening into an O when she followed the woman’s glance at windows dimly lit by struggling lamps in the blowing whiteness. Little eddies of snow swirled, settling just as quickly as they started. Her car, parked as close as possible, now looked like an unevenly burnt marshmallow.

Facing the dumbstruck woman, Viv said, “Stark determination of a reluctant maid of honor.”
