Before there was Moo Deng, there was William. @metmuseum.org's blue faience hippo dates back to ancient Egypt’s Middle Kingdom. He’s been charming museumgoers for over a century. Take a closer look at William: bit.ly/3FeIt4h 📷 : Hippopotamus (William), ca. 1961–1878 B.C.
A small blue faience hippopotamus figurine known as William from ancient Egypt’s Middle Kingdom (c. 1961–1878 BCE). The hippopotamus is decorated with black lotus flower patterns on its body, symbolizing the Nile’s vegetation. The figurine stands on four legs with a slightly lowered head and a rounded body, exhibiting signs of wear and cracking due to age.

#Roman helmets with face masks found at various sites in southwestern Germany. They were worn by cavalry soldiers during parades and tournaments. 📷 @almbawue.bsky.social 🏺 AncientBluesky #archaeology
Seven Roman face helmets made of metal, displayed against a black background. Some helmets are well-preserved with intricate details, while others are heavily corroded or fragmented. The designs feature stylized facial features, wavy hair, and decorative elements.

The Caergwrle Bowl which was found in 1823 in a field near Caergwrle Castle in Flintshire. Made of gold, tin and shale, the bowl provides a representation of a Bronze Age ship. Part of the collections at the National Museum of Wales. 📸 My own. #FindsFriday #Archaeology #Wales

Some #Neolithic tools of comfort & ornaments. Maybe living in Stone Age was harder, but they had pleasure too. I particularly like the 8000 year old bone belt buckles in 3rd photo. Photos 1-3 Anatolian Civilizations Museum, photo 4 Konya Museum.🏺

An ancient and magical amber bear. Carved some 10,000 years ago, it washed up on a beach at Fanø in Denmark from a submerged Mesolithic settlement under the North Sea. ✨Merry Christmas everyone✨ National Museum of Denmark 📷 by me #Archaeology
Figurine of an amber bear carved some 10,000 years ago during the Mesolithic period. The bear is seen in profile facing right. The legs are incomplete. The ears, muzzle and mouth are depicted. The figurine is displayed on a small metal stand. The display lighting shining on the bear’s head and neck enhances the translucence of the orange coloured amber

Happy Winter Solstice! This Bronze Age gold bulla is one of the most amazing objects I have had the privilege to handle as a member of the Treasure Valuation Committee. It is most frequently called the Shropshire Sun Pendant since the engraving looks like a sunrise/set. finds.org.uk/database/art...

A charming #Egyptian figurine of a hedgehog, made of faience, dating ca 1900 BC, from Thebes, #Egypt. The Egyptians associated hedgehogs with rebirth. On display at Neues Museum Berlin 📷 taken by me 🏺 AncientEgyptBluesky
Close-up of a hedgehog figurine. It is glazed in a bright blue, its eyes are black. The glaze is chipped in many places but remains mostly intact.
