N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 16/07/2026AI is awful for so many reasons: environmentally, morally, economically. It’s hugely inefficient theft that’s going to economically cripple millions. It’s not awful because it makes slop. It would be awful if it made masterpieces. Stop framing it as a quality bar that it’s just not hit yet. 100

N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 23/06/2026They’re not actually interested in what policies people like, just who the electorate would vote for, and Burnham is pretty popular in the polls. His job is just to keep the ship sailing with a fresh face and a Mancunian veneer of pseudo-left politics. 210
N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 23/06/2026I quite literally have a degree in computer science and mathematics, from about the same time as you as it happens (a couple years earlier), so I’m well aware. My point isn’t that AI is good, or even acceptable. But I can accept that this wildly inefficient system can produce meaningful data. 000
N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 23/06/2026I never implied any understanding, any more than simulating the weather implies a tempest in your computer. I’m not pro-AI, I’m fiercely against it. But I do feel that statements arguing it produces nothing worthwhile or interesting are either disingenuous or ill-informed and ill-considered. 000
N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 18/06/2026Do I think that destroying the planet is a price worth paying to sate that curiosity? Fuck no! My issues with AI run deeper than ‘it doesn’t work’ or ‘it makes slop’. It’s a fundamentally damaging force to humanity. If it suddenly worked as well as its evangelists said, that would also be bad! 000
N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 18/06/2026And that’s interesting! I doubt a majority of the training data was anxiety-laden, so what triggers measurable anxiety signifiers? Are there ways to ameliorate this? Could they be developed for people? AI is awful, but so is incuriousness. It’d be disingenuous to say there’s nought to learn here. 200
N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 18/06/2026I think uncritically referring to an LLM as sentient is naïve at best & dishonest at worst. But declaring that LLMs could never be ‘sentient’ requires a lot more thought than ‘vibes’ and ‘it’s just autocomplete.’ Why it isn’t sentient is a really interesting philosophical discussion all by itself. 000
N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 18/06/2026I don’t know if this is a convincing argument, any more than someone pointing at a fly as evidence that humans lack sapience. New things emerge with complexity. It probably isn’t sentient. But a) we’re still vague on what ‘sentient’ means and b) it’s interesting it’s simulating anxiety unprompted. 300

N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 11/05/2026But hantavirus is a bit too deadly to spread, and it’s just not nearly as transmissible. It’s 100% rational to be worried about these things. N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 10/05/2026Despite Starmer getting millions fewer votes than Corbyn in 2017 and half a million fewer than the ‘wipeout’ in 2019, they’re determined to maintain their failed trajectory. It’s a golden opportunity for a truly left party to take to the stage, even if every newspaper and party unite against them. 020
N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 10/05/2026It’s clear that the decision to move right was made, and now any election result is used to justify it. If Labour had done well, they’d go for business as usual. Reform does well and they try to be more like Reform. If the Green Party had come out on top, I guarantee they’d try to unite the right. 120
N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 10/05/2026I just knew that Labour would take the wrong message from this election. They were elected because the incumbents collapsed. They lost councils because they haemorrhaged the left and Reform dominated the centre-right. The winning strategy is not to keep aiming to be the Poundland Nazi Party. 130
N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 09/05/2026Turning it off and on again can actually fix things, though. There’s a reason it’s the first troubleshooting step. Replacing Starmer with Catherine West is like replacing your phone case when the battery’s dead. 030

But considering their deep ties to private health, there’s a perverse incentive for the system to get worse and THAT’S what they’re balancing against the optics. 130
N. Klaus @njwest.bsky.social · 05/05/2026Addendum: They want long waiting lists because it encourages people into the private sector, where their friends work. It also further justifies their increasing outsourcing to private sector companies for NHS patients. The worse the NHS is, the more money their friends make (directly or not). 272

But that time is emphatically not explicitly springboarding off a potential hate crime that has many Jewish people, understandably, afraid for their safety as a minority. 000
