I'm still alive! Got a lot going on offline, but I won't forget to touch grass and chase spiders along the way! Here, a missing sector spider (Zygiella x-notata). The additional image shows the web and pretty much explains how the spider got its common name. #SpiderSky #inverts #spiders 🌿🕷️

Here follows our recording of the #SolarEclipse2026 🌞🌚 By the end, the sun disappears behind a mountain. However, I think the effect is still quite neat! @mtrl-scientist.bsky.social ❤️

Anyphaena numida one of the not so common buzzing spiders. It's juv. but feeling confident! I first recorded (2) in Aug 2022 Penarth, think the first Welsh record. This one yesterday was from a few miles away in Cogan and only the 2nd time I have seen it. @britishspiders.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk

One of my favorite finds last week in Nebraska was this Bassaniana sp. crab spider. It was maybe 1/3 inch, and extremely well camouflaged on a tree. It's a new-to-me genus. I love finding cryptic creatures; it always feels like solving a puzzle to spot one of nature's "where's-Waldos." 🐙🌿 #BugSky
A macro photo vertical orientation, of a crab spider facing head-down on lichen-covered tree bark. The spider is dark brown and is well camouflaged as a bit of bark even though the lichens are mostly different shades of green.

A recent encounter I forgot to post! What I assume to be 'Agelena labyrinthica' with breakfast. She presented herself quite nicely on top of her webbing (possibly enjoying the sunshine). #SpiderSky #Spiders #Nature #inverts 🪲🌿
Image shows the frontal/dorsal view of a spider that is commonly refered to as 'labyrinth spider'.Same spider. This time a more lateral view. One can notice a tiny insect - possibly a fly - that the spider seems to be holding with its fangs.

Glad I could help you too! This site helps me a lot with distinguish similar species. Pages often state whether the specific spider can be confused with another species and if a closer look at the (genital) morphology is necessary to avoid misidentification 🤗

Another helpful (german) site is wiki.arages.de/index.php?ti... (which appears to be down at this minute 😅). These are generally my go-to resources as someone who lives in Switzerland. I hope that helps 🙌🏻 (3/3)

However, if you'd like to ID via (genital) morphology I'd seek out araneae.nmbe.ch - many species pages come with illustrations and other data helping with identification. Site is available in both german and english. (2/3)

Strictly speaking about identification help: one german book I can recommend is 'Kosmos-Atlas Spinnentiere Europas' which looks at different spiders (and some other arachnids) that are commonly encountered in central Europe (1/?)

I've been busy with some offline stuff. I hope you are all okay despite this insane heatwave... Today, to my surprise, a new encounter! A heliophanus sp. maybe? #JumpingSpider #SpiderSky #inverts 🌿🪲

Husband came up to me and told me (proudly) that he had relocated a jumping spider that was crawling up his arm onto one of my houseplants (Rhaphidophora tetrasperma). I love this man with all my heart 🥹❤️ The spider appears to be a male marpissa muscosa. #SpiderSky #Spiders #Inverts 🪴🕷️🪲

This reminds me of the saying: "I ha di zum frässe gärn!" (swiss) Which roughly translates to: "I love you so much that I could eat you!" and is often used to express profound love. On second thought, it is indeed a very odd thing to say...

From the garden - Trachyzelotes pedestris, on the wall of the house. Tried an epigyne shot through the glass tube as she was quite still - I think you can make out the V shape but got too close with the camera.
Blurry but you can see the V-shaped epigyne of Trachyzelotes pedestris.

A few days ago I was waiting by the door for the husband to come up the stairs. Whilst leaning with my head agsinst the door, something tickled my ear... Assumed Cheiracanthium sp. (possibly C. mildei), now safely removed from the door. #SpiderSky #Spiders #TickleMonster #inverts 🌿🪲🖤
As we both got startled the spider hid behind the door seal strip. Only four of its eight legs visible.A frontal view of the spider. Captured with the classical paper and glas method after luring it carefully out from behind the door seal strip. A yellow spider (relatively big for Swiss standards) with darker couloured 'paws' and chelicerae.

Clear your mind for moment and understand this. We are altering the very #climate of the planet in a way that's dangerous for our own survival and the stability of our ecosystems. With only a few exceptions, our politicians are not only looking the other way but actively making the problem worse.
