Antibiotic resistance isn't just a genetic problem; it's ecological. New research from #HHMIInvestigator Harmit Malik & co shows that when a dangerous bacterium shares space w/a common fungus, it can be pushed toward resistance it wouldn't develop alone — but with a built-in weakness bit.ly/4g1jLnZ

A black-and-white archival photograph of Nobel laureate Dr. Gerty Theresa Cori (1896–1957) working in her laboratory. Standing behind a wooden workbench filled with chemical glassware, the biochemist is captured mid-experiment. She wears a crisp white laboratory coat over a dark collar, with a watch fastened to her left wrist. With a focused, serious expression, she raises her right arm to use a glass pipette, carefully measuring liquid into a test tube held in her left hand. The foreground features a rack of test tubes, funnels lined with white filter paper, and various glass vessels. In the softly blurred background, dark wooden shelves are lined with medicine bottles, jars, and scientific equipment. The composition highlights her hands-on scientific labor, projecting a mood of intense dedication and intellectual rigor. This image serves as a powerful historical record of the first American woman to win a Nobel Prize in science for her pioneering discoveries in glucose metabolism.

Chemist & X-ray crystallographer Rosalind Franklin's meticulous research was instrumental in uncovering DNA's molecular structure. Most famous for her role in the DNA double helix discovery, her work also revolutionized our understanding of viruses & coal. She was born #OTD in 1920. #WomenInSTEM 🧵
A classic, black-and-white studio portrait of a young Dr. Rosalind Franklin (1920–1958), the pioneering British chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose data was foundational to uncovering the double-helix structure of DNA. Captured from the chest up, Franklin sits in a three-quarter pose, her body angled slightly toward the left while her gaze directly meets the viewer. She possesses a calm, intelligent, and subtly enigmatic expression, with her dark hair neatly parted on the side and styled back away from her face. She wears a dark, long-sleeved button-down blouse with structured shoulders, a sharp collar, and fabric buttons down the front placket. The background is a soft, minimalist studio gradient of neutral grays that creates a gentle vignette effect, casting a soft light on the right side of her face. The composition is clean, formal, and balanced, evoking a mood of quiet determination, dignity, and brilliant intellectual poise characteristic of the early 20th-century scientific vanguard.

A black-and-white historical photograph of Elizabeth Bugie, a pioneering biochemist, working in a laboratory. She is shown from the waist up, wearing a short-sleeved white top and focusing intently on her work.

She has dark, shoulder-length hair and is holding a piece of glassware connected to a black rubber tube, seemingly adjusting a filtration or distillation setup. Several Erlenmeyer flasks and glass funnels sit on the bench in front of her. In the background, shelves are filled with numerous glass chemical bottles of various sizes, and a window with multiple panes is visible to the right.

Susan B. Anthony dedicated her life to women's #suffrage & campaigned for the abolition of slavery, women's property rights & more: susanbanthonyhouse.org/her-story/bi... Active until she died, #OTD in 1906. She never got to vote in her lifetime (well, legally that is). #WomensHistoryMonth #WHM
A classic black-and-white portrait photograph of Susan B. Anthony, the legendary American suffragist, abolitionist, and women's rights pioneer, taken in her later years. She is seated in a formal pose against a plain dark background, wearing a high-necked, long-sleeved black dress with elaborate lace trim and floral-patterned lace collar and cuffs. Her white hair is neatly styled in a low bun with a small decorative comb or ribbon. She gazes to the left of the camera with a calm, resolute, and dignified expression—her face conveying unwavering determination and quiet strength. The image captures her as a tireless advocate who co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association, fought for decades to secure voting rights for women (culminating in the 19th Amendment after her death), and remains an enduring symbol of perseverance in the struggle for gender equality. The soft lighting and formal composition highlight her as an icon of the suffrage movement.
