‘The Doll’ by Bolesław Prus (1890) A Polish classic, about a hard-headed businessmen tormented by his romantic soul. In his troubled bid to bridge the class divide, he speaks to a nation losing its dream of freedom, and struggling to see redemption in wealth #booksky
Cover in Polish, showing stylised trees set against a ruined castle, one referred to in the novel. Because the pivotal love interest is a seemingly fickle female aristocrat, the doll in question is often taken to mean her. However, the title refers to an actual doll from a subplot.

I found a thriller from 1989, imagining an end to the Soviet Union. A murder occurs on the provisional government’s watch. Already a fascinating setting, perhaps even more so in light of a different future #booksky
‘U.S.S.A’ by David Madsen. ‘The outstanding novel of Russia tomorrow- under the American jackboot’. This oversells the American presence somewhat, which is arguably murkier. A bronze American eagle is suspended over a badge of the United Soviet States of America, combining tthe Red Star with the Stars and Stripes.
