Follow up question for y’all fluent folks: Is there context lost in translation here too? The english makes it sound like the light with Mari is being put aside, and Lara is leaving to find new light. For me, that would really damage the “surely they’ll reunite and live together” interpretation.

I genuinely wish I could have understood it the way you did just as immediately as you had. I was really glad to find out “honto yo” was present tense hours later, but the first few hours I was feeling sour about the past tense I’d read.

I was angry at first. Now lukewarm. There was context lost in translation that partly salvages the epilogue imho. “Honto yo” is present tense & reads more as reaffirming wanting to live together. “I meant it” is past tense & can read as affirmative OR as a past truth that no longer applies.

We’re frustrated about the “I want to live with Mari” flip to moving away without telling Mari why. It was whiplash. Also making a point to write that she kept dating Luca after realizing she loved Mari most? Feels very “no-homo.” LaraMari is still queerplatonic imho, but that feels cowardly now.

It all comes down to this: I was pressured to stay on something that hurt me for years (until cancer!!) because they wanted me to conform to my assigned gender. And they try to scare trans kids from even trying out meds temporarily because they also want them to conform to assigned genders.

I was coerced into birth control for PMOS. They pressured me to stay on even after the benefits were slim & the side effects were intense for me personally. But when hormonal interventions are desperately wanted by trans teens, suddenly everybody is too scared of side effects to even let them try?

Puberty blockers & hormonal birth control are already given to cis kids & teens for other reasons where the benefit purportedly outweighs the low risks we’re aware of. It’s absolute cognitive dissonance to act like precocious puberty or PMOS deserve to try interventions but dysphoria doesn’t.

episode 6 of Goodbye Lara hit so many trans notes. Lisa and Kota leave behind their old lives and roles. they have to synthesize a drug in small vials to retain physical form. one of them is exploited as a sideshow attraction. it’s a one-two punch of disability and queer metaphor that feels trans.

I’ve always understood “comphet” to be something lots of sapphics go through irl due to societal pressures. This show is about deconstructing society’s preconceived notions and pressures. So it is more than reasonable to depict that kind of confusion in fictional sapphics before they break free.

They aren’t saying it isn’t gay. They are claiming not all sapphic anime is the “yuri genre.” As in queer sapphic rep could be in yuri or in another genre. There’s lots of cyclical debate about if “yuri” is a genre or not. I don’t have a horse in that race. Just letting you know what OP meant.

**The “feminine speech patterns” may be more prominent in Japanese than in other dubs. I have noticed butch interpretations of her are more common in English & Chinese fandom spaces and I’m NOT trying to invalidate them. I’m just speaking on how I’ve personally related to the version I watched.

Every time a straight person goes “Why can’t they just be friends?” in response to queer pairs, they’ve already taken the L by saying “just,” essentially acknowledging that they see typical friendship as less than. Queerplatonic is not “just friends.” It’s a kind of soulmate & queer af.

Queerplatonic is a term to describe bonds that go beyond friendship in devotion & intimacy but lack romantic &/or sexual behaviors. It’s a useful term (esp for ace-spec folks) as it acknowledges the queerness of such bonds in a society that expects other relationships to be priority. For example

It’s clear Mari is Lara’s most important person. In a society that positions familial love & heterosexual love above friendship, anything else taking the top spot is arguably queer. It could turn out sapphic, queerplatonic, or ace-spec-sapphic. But that’s all queer imho.
