Breaking news: The Earth is getting rounder agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...
INBOX:
Earth’s poles are rising by 0.5 to 1 millimeters per year, slowly un-squashing our planet’s slightly flattened, jelly-donut-like shape, according to a new study. Linking satellite measurements of changing altitude across Earth’s surface from 1997 to 2015 to the planet’s shape, researchers found that the rounding effect also seems to be accelerating over time, with the poles rising an extra 0.4 millimeters per year faster every decade. Though our planet seems solid, the Earth’s interior acts more like an extremely slow-flowing liquid, warping over time under forces like the weight of ice sheets and oceans. Currently, our planet bulges out a little around the equator. But as ice sheets melt and reduce the force acting on the Earth at the poles, the equator is gradually cinching in as the poles push upwards, molding our planet into a more spherical shape. [JGR Solid Earth study]

After the Clarity Act failed a key vote earlier this month, I spoke to over a dozen people about why. Some of them pointed to the president's crypto businesses and the looming midterm election. Others said the process had issues from the start. Here's my post-mortem. www.coindesk.com/news-analysi...

Journalism, even as it is being destroyed, is such a specialized field that it will be almost impossible to see how it gets eaten away. It’s already happening, obviously. AI summaries are eating away ad rev. Websites are obsolete. Less and less people read. But in a sense it’s still thriving.

I was too young to really know about 9/11; I was 6 when it happened and my parents naturally didn't really tell me about it. But I knew my Sikh neighbors didn't leave their apartment for weeks, that how we saw my mom off to the airport changed, that so much changed. Anyways. Permit me a moment.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand put out a statement Friday calling for Congress to block the U.S. president and other electeds from profiting off their own issued memcoins, in wake of Donald Trump's disclosure that he made ~$1.4 billion off crypto last year
GILLIBRAND CALLS TO BAN TRUMP AND ELECTED OFFICIALS FROM ISSUING MEMECOINS

Washington, D.C. – Following new reporting [nytimes.com] on President Trump's personal financial disclosures — which show that his single largest source of income in 2025, $636 million, came from issuing a memecoin — U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand renewed her call for Congress to bar all elected officials, and their spouses, from issuing or sponsoring their own digital assets. Under the proposal Senator Gillibrand has championed alongside a group of colleagues, it would be illegal for President Trump to issue or sponsor any digital asset, including memecoins. The First Lady also issued her own memecoin and separately reported $6 million in income from NFTs and other digital collectibles.

"This is a commonsense requirement that should get broad bipartisan support – public officials and their spouses should not be issuing memecoins. We cannot let self-dealing destroy an opportunity to strengthen consumer protections, crack down on illicit finance, and expand economic opportunity for the millions of Americans our financial system has left behind,” said Senator Gillibrand. “The time to act is now — and that must include ethics reforms that prohibit members of Congress, the president, and their spouses from cashing in on their office."

Earlier this year, speaking from the main stage at a conference of industry insiders, Senator Gillibrand declared that no bill would pass without an ethics provision that captures the president's own activity. She has spent years working to regulate a crypto industry that today operates with little to no consumer protection and increasingly offshore, beyond the reach of U.S. law. Earlier this year, she also led a bipartisan bill [politico.com] to crack down on the newly created prediction markets and has been a longtime leader in efforts to ban all members of Congress [gillibrand.senate.gov] and their spouses from owning or trading stocks while in office.
