Another thing to remember on this bisexual day is that The Grungler is canonically bi. I do enjoy how it's become a term for "token cis guy who hangs out with a bunch of trans weirdos" but the original post was also about straight women being weird about bi men.
women will go on a 1st date with a guy and things will be going well until the guy casually mentions he's bi and she'll go home and start posting stuff like like 'we need to normalize being straight' and 'whatever happened to beauty' meanwhile the guy went home to play video games with a bunch of weird discord transsexuals and he named his character 'the grungler' and he keeps saying stuff like 'check it out guys, i'm the grungler'

My 3.5-star review of Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach — Justice for Janet the elephant, she did rampage through the circus with a bunch of kids on her back, but she didn't do what she's been accused of here
Cover of the book Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach.Text: This is a great book for anyone looking to dip their toes into the lives of people who work to reduce the friction between humanity and our fellow species on planet Earth. I came away tickled by Mary Roach's candor, and enlightened by her willingness to dive into Colorado dumpsters, Delhi bureaucracy, and Vatican City Easter preparations in search of the truth about coexistence. I would have liked more discussion about the ways climate change will affect the research and conservation efforts detailed within, but overall it's a fun, thought-provoking read.

While the book is chock-full of information about the animals we share the world with, I did spot one instance where Roach seems to have let one anecdote rewrite history. As far as I can tell, the elephant named Janet that was the center of a February 1, 1992 incident in Tampa, Florida, simply took off with guests on her back during a ride. She did have to be shot by police to prevent her from plowing into a tent full of visitors to the Great American Circus, but her crimes did not include killing anyone via a headstand. There WAS an incident in Tampa almost exactly three years earlier, on February 6, 1989, in which a man leading an elephant named Casey slipped and fell. According to the Tampa Bay Times, "Witnesses said the elephant put its head on the man's chest for about five seconds, crushing him to death." Roach has mixed up her elephants, which does make me wonder if there's anything else in the book that she's misremembering.

My 3.75-star review of The Harp of Kings (Warrior Bards No. 1) by Juliet Marillier — I think Liobhan should have been allowed to blow Rodan's head smoove off
Cover of the book The Harp of Kings (Warrior Bards No. 1) by Juliet Marillier.Text: There's a strange balancing act happening in this series opener from Juliet Marillier, and I kind of love it. We're in a fantastical Ireland, complete with portals to a hidden faery realm, frightening crow-beasts that wing through a dark forest, and a missing magical harp. Most of the story is actually about a rocky succession crisis for one of the kingdoms, and how nobody has confidence in the presumed heir. The three point-of-view characters — Liobhan, Dau, and Brocc — are trainees in a secret society of elite warriors and spies, in cutthroat competition to prove their worth. They spend a majority of their mission doing chores around the keep and gleaning insight from regular conversation with the workforce. There's a mysterious wisewoman in the woods who stops a forest fire by summoning rain. Her greatest achievement is getting Dau to confront his childhood trauma. It's like Marillier set out to write an epic tale about the Fair Folk shaping human affairs and got sidetracked researching the daily life of medieval laundresses.

Despite this intriguing mixture of tones, the three points of view do feel lopsided. Liobhan and Dau have the real meat of the story in their portions, as well as the most strife and personal growth. Brocc, meanwhile, begins the book as a musical lad and ends the book as a musical lad. He also spends a good two-thirds of the book on the bench in the Otherworld, composing a song for the faery queen while Liobhan and Dau scramble to cover for him in the human world. I didn't hate the guy, but I am looking forward to the clear frontrunner to succeed his point-of-view in the next book: Garbh.

My 2.5-star review of The Haar by David Sodergren — The Shape of Water (2017) for fans of Iron Lung (2026), is what I would say if I was a book publishing executive trying to snag an audience using words in formations they already know: Anyway, support indie authors
Cover of the book The Haar by David Sodergren.Text: If you're a fan of low-budget slasher movies and want that kind of atmosphere in book form, David Sodergren has you covered. It's funny, it's gory, it stars an octogenarian heroine in an odd couple romance with a horrifying sea creature, every bad person is a cartoon villain, and it doesn't overstay its welcome. The story even has some deeper themes beneath its slimy skin about the nature of love and life, if you're into that sort of thing. I won't deny I enjoyed the read, but it was definitely more of a microwaved popcorn indulgence than a balanced meal.

My 3.5-star review of Wildwood (Wildwood Chronicles No. 1) by Colin Meloy and illustrated by Carson Ellis — Soon to deny Disney the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for the fifth year in a row
Cover of the book Wildwood (Wildwood Chronicles No. 1) by Colin Meloy and illustrated by Carson Ellis.Text: I appreciate a fairy tale that's happening just over the hill from the main characters' real-life house, because that's what childhood play and imagination was all about. I also appreciate a fairy tale where some of the adults are deceitful, selfish, or otherwise useless in solving the problems facing the protagonists, especially if there are still adults around who are kind and helpful and understanding so that the kids don't have to do everything. And finally, I appreciate a fairy tale where a protagonist decides to stay in the wondrous land they were dropped into, even if I am mystified as to why Curtis just vanished into Wildwood without even a goodbye to his family in Portland.

Colin Meloy wrote a good story full of dark, twisting themes, and Carson Ellis brought the world to life with her cozy illustrations of talking animals and bloody battles. Young people will definitely devour this book like the hungry ivy. It does leave many of its plot threads loose, but I have to assume those get tied up in later volumes. I guess I'll find out.

My 3-star review of House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski — Me to Johnny Truant, and also Johnny Truant to Zampanò: "I ain't reading all that. I'm happy for u tho. Or sorry that happened"
Cover of the book House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski.Text: At what point does satire turn into the thing it's satirizing? That's the question that haunts me while reading Mark Z. Danielewski's landmark experimental novel.

I can recognize that Johnny's rambling notes and Zampanò's obsessive, spiraling scholarship about a horrific documentary that doesn't exist are demonstrative: They are meant to give the reader the same feeling of descending into madness as the two men destroyed by the book you are holding. It's all very meta, but it doesn't change the fact that Zampanò's academic opus is dry, meandering, and needlessly detailed in ways that made me groan. Johnny's unreliability is uninteresting more than not. And the poor Navidsons are smothered and lost within these works in the same way they are consumed by their Virginia home, and the horror gives way to tedium.

At the end of the day, this book is a freshman film student's overenthusiastic attempt at a dissertation that he handed off to his porn-brained roommate for notes, and the roommate delivered in the form of long recollections of sexy finger-banging, crap he found on the floor, and a mess of letters from his estranged mother. This book may have inspired all sorts of modern horror settings, but what they took from this story was the re-telling of the Greek Labyrinth and its miasma infecting all who come in contact with it. Nobody copied the footnotes about geology.

My 4.75-star review of Parable of the Sower (Earthseed No. 1) by Octavia E. Butler — According to the timeline, we are currently in Chapter 10 of this book, and you have until October 10, 2027, to jump in and read along with the USA collapsing around Lauren Oya Olamina in real time
Cover of the book Parable of the Sower (Earthseed No. 1) by Octavia E. Butler.Text: Octavia E. Butler might not be able to write a fully-convincing teenage girl's diary, but she sure can write a story that forces readers to share in protagonist Lauren's joy and pain as if they also had hyperempathy syndrome. More than that, she can make up a religion, its mantras, and its foundational verses in a way that both makes sense for something penned by a young person in a crumbling empire, and also makes sense to the reader as something destined to grow beyond its humble beginnings. It's incredibly impressive.

Butler's chosen backdrops for Lauren's journey do occasionally feel dated, even if you don't take into account the fictional events happening in real years that have already ended. The public panic over intensely-specific recreational drugs and their unintended consequences for drug users' children, for example, feels very of-the-time for a book originally published in 1993. On the other hand, the displacement of huge populations due to catastrophic climate change, the failure and privatization of public services, and the never-ending exploitation of the desperate are all still incredibly relevant today. I wonder if there will ever come a time where this book feels like a complete bygone. And hell, maybe there will be something like Pyro on the market someday.

By the way, if you're reading a copy of the book with an afterword by N. K. Jemisin, skip it until your second read-through. She spoils some major plot points from the next book.

My 3.5-star review of The Apothecary Diaries (manga), Vol. 1 by Hyūganatsu and illustrated by Nekokurage — I have never known chocolate to do what it did to Precious Consort Gyokuyō's ladies-in-waiting
Cover of the manga version of The Apothecary Diaries, Vol. 1 by Hyūganatsu and illustrated by Nekokurage.Text: The cloistered world of an emperor's palace feels wide and intriguing in the opening entry of Hyūganatsu's series, aided by beautiful art from Nekokurage.

Curious, matter-of-fact protagonist Maomao suffers from the usual, hypocritical trappings of a manga heroine: She is too skinny, she has freckles, and she has quirks that set her apart from the other women of the Inner Court despite wearing the same anime face as every other woman depicted and immediately catching the eye of the gorgeous eunuch in charge of the concubines' living quarters. Pretty boy Jinshi, likewise, can't help but violate her personal boundaries in his fascination with this girl who knows how to make chocolate and looks at him like he's a slug. Good luck to Maomao on that front, I guess, but at least she seems to realize that he's being a creep and is much more interested in collecting medicinal plants.

As for the story's focus on Maomao's detective work within the Inner Court, the miniature mysteries are fun to read but lack the personal challenge qualities of other whodunits. The plot does lay out clues for Maomao and readers to discover, but the resolution is then entirely informed by something that happened to Maomao in her previous work at a high-end brothel. I can't say it's not satisfying to watch our heroine lay out her deductions, though.

My 3.5-star review of Unconquerable Sun (The Sun Chronicles No. 1) by Kate Elliott — Insanely funny to me that whenever Princess Sun needs a distraction, she deploys Chaonia's version of Harry Styles to go sing a song down the street while she breaks into a temple or whatever
Cover of the book Unconquerable Sun (The Sun Chronicles No. 1) by Kate Elliott.Text: I found this series opener flawed but fun. I'm not sure why Kate Elliott feels the need to jump between so many point-of-view characters when it undermines the intrigue in her main character, Princess Sun. It's hard to get invested in the mental calculations and strategizing of Chaonia's heir apparent when every other chapter pulls away from her to reassure us that the latest person she's hesitant to trust is trustworthy, actually, even if they won't outright say it.

Still, Sun's entourage of Companions and chosen allies are an enjoyable bunch: There's only so much ill will I can hold toward a group that was clearly assembled to be the most functional tabletop role-playing party of all time. The characters play off of each other well as they careen around the plot (and Chaonia) at superluminal speed, dashing from public relations crisis to interstellar war zone to sea monster-infested waters. At times the breakneck pace feels ludicrous, but it is partially making up for the aforementioned problem with undermined intrigue, so I'll let it slide.

Still, I can't excuse the fact that Persephone Lee has about five minutes of conversation with Zizou before they start kissing. Even if the black sheep of Lee House and the warrior sworn to an enemy empire are in a new life-threatening situation every 12 hours, that's way too fast.

My 2.5-star review of Queer Little Nightmares edited by David Ly and Daniel Zomparelli — A good read for Pride Month or Halloween, honestly
Cover of the anthology Queer Little Nightmares edited by David Ly and Daniel Zomparelli.Text: David Ly and Daniel Zomparelli have put together a nice collection of stories and poems here, each one a little window with rainbow-colored glass into a new, ghoulish dimension. The ghoulishness does vary wildly however, running the full gamut from a cute coming-of-age romance between lesbian werewolves, to gay, entomophobic body horror in an abandoned amusement park, to a straightforward tale about a catfish getting catfished, to a stalker horror about a trans woman caught in a struggle between Greek gods.

Truthfully, the anthology is all over the place in tone. It might have benefited from stricter rules on genre and what, exactly, counts as "monstrous." But if a queer lens is the uniting factor, then it should be obvious to the readers that monstrosity is in the eye of the beholder, and public reception to monsters depends on what street you're walking down. Since I gravitate toward more straightforward narratives, my favorites were Amber Dawn's aforementioned lesbian werewolf romance, "Wooly Bully"; the narrator's heartbreaking dedication to a dead lover in "The Vetala's Song" by Anuja Varghese; the thought-provoking examination of gender-nonconforming presentation in "Glamour-Us" by Andrew Wilmot; Avra Margariti's poem "Cryptid Cruising" about fucking Mothman in a public park; and David Ly's "The Call" about two boys kissing and becoming cecaelia.
