“He died that others might live.” Very heavy words, carved into the headstone of a soldier who was only 16 years old. A simple epitaph, but an extraordinarily powerful reminder of the sacrifice made by so many young men during the First World War. 📍Peronne Road Cemetery 🇫🇷

Joan Clarke: the lone female cryptanalyst in Alan Turing’s inner circle. A math genius denied her Cambridge degree for being a woman, she mastered "Banburismus" to crack Nazi U-boat Enigma keys, saving thousands of Allied lives in the Battle of the Atlantic. Died #OTD in 1996. #WomenInSTEM #WWII
A studio portrait of British cryptanalyst and codebreaker Joan Clarke (1917–1996), celebrated for her elite mathematical role in Alan Turing's inner circle at Bletchley Park during World War II. The overall composition captures Clarke from the chest up in a left-facing side profile, with her head turned toward the viewer. She looks directly at the camera with a calm, intelligent, and subtly smiling expression. She has short, darkly styled curly hair arranged in voluminous waves. She wears round, thin-framed wire glasses, dark lipstick, and a formal military or institutional uniform jacket featuring lapels, buttons, a collared shirt, and a dark necktie beneath. Stitched onto her upper sleeve is an insignia consisting of a white spread-winged bird patch above two parallel chevron stripes. The setting is a minimalist studio background with a neutral, soft gradient gray tone. The clear lighting emphasizes the historic, dignified, and determined mood of a pioneering wartime mathematician.
