One necessary #urbanist Angeleno skill that I've had to focus on this year is finding the narrow strip of shadow cast by a traffic light or electrical pole to stand inside of while I wait for the crossing sign to turn. That like 2-3 degree difference is huge when this place is turning into Florida.

I got to the part of “Strawberry Days” by David Neiwert where the ferry accident that nearly wiped out the entire Suda family is mentioned. This is almost right: it was in 1928, and my great aunt Bernadette went to the Convent while my grandpa George was raised elsewhere.

First part of page except from “Strawberry Days” says “The most striking tragedy befell the family of Teikichi Suda in 1925.”

Playing Dawn of the Machine for Quake's 30th has got me rinsing more mods they packaged with the Nightdive release. Love how easily they load up. 1st I played "Beyond Belief" (1997), now I'm trying "Slave Zero X" (2024). Great way to contrast decades of level design refinement. It's very "Ion Fury".

The sandstone triangle that forms the source of the water flow is inlaid with river rocks. There are more out-of-habitat redwood trees here too, forming a vista on an elevated hill to view the rest of the piece from. Other sections are indistinguishable from generic corporate office park structures.

These trees were planted in 1970 and the park opened in '75. They are watered 5x/wk by a potable water sprinkler system. They only reach <100ft, where as native habitat ones up north can be 3-4x that height. And they were the surplus of a giveaway of redwood seedlings by a local bank. Bizarre stuff.

OC adventures from yesterday pt 1: We drove down to Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea to see the only sustained grove of redwood trees in Southern California. We also saw a baby rattlesnake under the bench we were snacking at, and it randomly rained for like 10min as soon as we arrived??? Magical.
