Unfortunately the price of electricity is set by the marginal price of gas. So even when the supply in mostly low carbon, the market price is set high.

Should we be setting a climate action level target like we set a NATO defense spending target? Say a target of 2% of GDP. As a security issue the same as the defense spending target? #energysky

I've been trying to understand why I feel the particular flavor of distressed that I do right now. I think it's because we can no longer discuss the lessons we should be learning from any kind of disaster without the worst chucklefucks coming out of the woodwork to wreck everything.

People often say that breeder reactors "make more fuel than they consume". I think a wood stove analogy is more intuitive: "They ignite more logs than they need, so you can go start other fires". Regular reactors burn kindling (U-235). Breeder burn logs (U-238 or Th-232).
Squares of Uranium-238, Thorium-232, and a little bit of U-235, showing that there's a lot more fertile fuel than fissile.

Don't they just tot up and charge [n]kWh for each tariff?

But each phase is metered separately on one tariff/bill isn't it? Don't they just Tott up the totals in/out and add a service charge?

Does it matter that much? For most situations, surely it's just a passing demand reduction for the phase/building.

This is terribly sloppy journalism. EDF had zero involvement in UK nuclear in 2007, and they're a supplier, not the customer so it's not their decision. HP-C wasn't even shortlisted until 2012. It was ordered in late 2016. And you're ignoring the fact that that main delay was the pandemic.

BloombergNEF recently revised it's green hydrogen cost projections. $1/kg H2? Forget about it. Already $2/kg is a stretch, even for China and India who don't reach it until 2040. Worth noting these are average costs tho. There will be exceptional projects that will outperform.

We need to build more transmission, this is obvious. But what I think a lot of people overlook is the fact that even if we build more tx, we still need to completely overhaul the interconnection process. The current process does not make any sense for a high renewable penetration grid

There's no shortage of lessons in Flamanville for nuclear proponents, but nuclear opponents should also take heed of the IPCC who have nuclear in all successful 1.5-2°C mitigation pathways through 2100. www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/w... There is no 'renewables only' climate objective. Only Carbon matters.

To this end EDF/Framatome have learned and redesigned the EPR so it should be cheaper (and faster!) to build. And finally. There's no rule that reaching net zero will save money. We have to be prepared to invest heavily.

My admittedly long winded point is that these are constructor issues, not design or technology issues. As constructors 're learn' the skills we had in the 1980's then the build time will tend to even out.

- Nationalised industries being what they are, EDF & AREVA couldn't be seen to be giving the order to a foreign supplier (such as UK-Sheffield Forgemasters) for a plant in France (Flammanville) -and so despite it being the limit of their capacity, the order went to le Creusot

Nick Greenacre @nicknet.bsky.social · 22/12/2024
The story here isn't so much about nuclear as it is politics & business. When the EPR was specified, AREVA designed it to significantly exceed every European regulatory requirement. Part of that was that the (unusually large) pressure vessel would be made from as few individual forgings as possible.

This is probably the most important story of year in the energy transition. ~600 gigawatts of new solar added to world grids today. That will produce ~1,000 terawatt-hours of clean electricity, or ~25% of all US electricity use or 2/3 of India's. In one year! Simply massive & it's accelerating. 🔌💡

Buying green hydrogen in the UK today will set you back *at least* £30/kg H2. Real quotes from suppliers. Sure it’ll get cheaper with time but you can kiss £4/kg goodbye before 2035.

"for some reason you said "it doesn't really help with the demand profile"" It's interesting that you went to the effort of rewriting what I said. Was that just so you could claim the point (UK lowest solar insolation and highest grid demand) was ambiguous? bsky.app/profile/nick...
