Moving energy through space and time. Working at the nexus of transmission and storage. Please consider that I may be joking.

In 1927 PSEG, PEC, and PPL interconnected their systems to pool power. This effectively was “interregional” transmission at the time. The same people fighting transmission today benefit massively from the interconnected system pioneered in the past that is what we know as “the grid” today.

If the anti-RTO crowd is actually concerned with consumer protection, it’d be nice to see them advocate for minimum transparency requirements. The amount of data (both planning and operations) readily available in RTO regions versus traditional regions is stark

Risks…? The issue is, the even though the data center load growth forecasts can be duplicative, the power industry’s pace of change will still be the limiting factor to new development www.utilitydive.com/news/load-fo...

Been on a social media break for the best possible reason. Can’t express in words how proud I am. Both Momma and the boys are doing well thankfully. Their big sister has been a great helper so far and has adjusted well to no longer being the only child!

I’m proud of the hard work our team did to take the Transmission Facilitation Program from legislative text to a powerful tool for transmission deployment that provides real benefits to real people at low risk to taxpayers. This video shows some of those benefits. www.energy.gov/gdo/articles...

People replying to this are acting like all rural areas have grocery stores in the immediate area, so they assume instead of two hours these folks could walk to one or something. For instance we had about an hour round trip to the nearest grocery store, so two hours isn’t much further

I see this same issue with a lot of folks on acid rain and the Clean Air Act. The eternal curse of successfully averting a disaster - people begin to believe it wasn’t an issue in the first place.

We need to build more transmission, this is obvious. But what I think a lot of people overlook is the fact that even if we build more tx, we still need to completely overhaul the interconnection process. The current process does not make any sense for a high renewable penetration grid

Modeling is easy. However, modeling a system well, choosing the right methodology, setting up the inputs, assumptions and scenarios, etc., such that the output is worthwhile (and then interpreting the results correctly) is difficult.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; power systems protection will be the next big issue facing the energy transition after interconnection & permitting - we’re already seeing these issues play out in IBR standards. This is a great resource to learn the basics from a pro

Fantastic book, highly recommend. Another rather timely quote wrt to the current dilemma we find ourselves in: “a system just can’t respond to short-term changes when it has long term delays. That’s why a massive central-planning system necessarily functions poorly”

While I’ve always thought of DLRs as an operational tool with low value for planning, with risk hours in many systems switching to winter (either outright winter peaking or at least dual peaking) the case for DLRs as a planning resource is becoming stronger. 🔌💡

I keep trying to reconcile these two maps. The only thing I can think of is they made an assumption that by increasing the transfer between two regions, the power stops at the importing region, ignoring the rest of the grid - which is obviously wrong.. And even that doesn’t really explain it 🔌💡

someone should think of a way to price electricity more granularly to take into account things like transmission congestion. idk could help send efficient price signals on where to build new generation, transmission, and storage

If thermals are concerned about ramping ability, maybe they should consider installing battery storage? A hedge against ramp rate limitations, if you will.

This is not original at all, but the latest volts pod made me think of it. The opportunity set for repurposing retiring coal plants w/ nuclear and/or BESS facilities is massive. Would have an outsized impact on providing inertia and 24/7 clean power.🔌💡

ELCC is inherently a system level metric and can't be divorced from transmission & storage. Build in more deliverability of the system should in theory increase the ELCC of resources dependent on said transmission. Same applies to storage. 🔌💡

RECs have been under fire for a while now, and I think that’s good as we need to push for more granularity with time matching (and deliverability & additionality as the next frontiers). That said, I think it’s worth acknowledging the impact RECs had in launching the industry 🔌💡
