I brought a minidisc player in 1998 with the idea of recording lectures. Found in the loft just last week, brand new with a pile of unused discs except one which has a two hour recording of Jacques Derrida in Leicester.

That record was like the holy grail to me (it had Rainbow plus Saxon, Scorpions, Quiet Riot) but even then I was embarrassed for him. I’m going to have to dig it out to check I’m not imagining it

This record's about as Heavy Metal as Bad News arguing over the number of sausages served in a motorway service area all day breakfast, but who cares when it's one of the best pop 45s ever released. And it's total pop, written by the same person who wrote So You Win Again for Hot Chocolate.-

On the 1980 Monsters of Rock compilation album, I recall some cringe worthy between song jokes by Bonnet and even a Robin Day impression at one point. In front of 1000s of heavy metal fans.

Spent the week trying to knock 10 years worth of talks, proposals, fragments of half baked ideas etc into a coherent book proposal and have reached the conclusion that I have no idea what I’m doing and am an idiot.

Loved The Masterplan by them, and The High record too. What a year! I was working in Dillons bookstore plotting my escape from Birmingham (it was art school that saved me rather than music)

I think every film critic wilfully misquoting Wilson or playing the ‘but she doesn’t understand that a film and a text are different’ card should be hit over the head with a copy of Barthe’s Mythologies until they shut up

I really want to enjoy the #proms prog concert but it is really underwhelming - the orchestra sound listless, the drums are clunky and all the singers are struggling with pitch - what’s going on? Under rehearsed or bad monitors?

Charcoal was always my favourite medium for life drawing at art school - short but chunky bits of charcoal, using the long edge more than the tip on big sheets of paper (A0). Giacometti and Auerbach as guides...

The intoxication of cheap poetry - New order are the epitome of this - Lyrics that read like something hastily scribbled down on the way to the session and then you find yourself in tears listening to it

Have not read this whole piece yet but as someone who has a child who struggled to attend school as well as friends and partners who have gone through burnout, what i’ve read so far really resonates.

When Figo was little we let him out into our small back garden for his night time toilet break. As I collected his doings by flashlight I always used to sing 'Poo in the dark, and you're to blame/ You give pups a bad name' a la Bon Jovi. Kept me entertained at least.

Its a really interesting rhetorical form isn't it - 'I'm going to let you, clever Telegraph reader, in on a little secret I can only share with you as the masses don't understand' - flattery mixed with wishful thinking and a dash of implicit elitism.

I've been trying to work out specifically what made me dislike it so much and I think it is something to do with the mismatch between money spent (too much), what it thinks it is (art) and what it actually is (B movie but minus the camp)
