Is there a 'war on the countryside'? Yes - but it's the one being waged by the landowners who unleash 50 million pheasants each year... Step forward 'Lord' Christian Brighty to explain, in this devastating (and hilarious) video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFi8...

@stevoallain.bsky.social wondering if you have evidence of the harm pheasants do to herp populations?

Did you get confirmation, either way, on the Hook - tip? I see @mavisbickle.bsky.social recently had a similar quandary. I would also err on the side of Oak in Mavis's case? Like you say the marking at the wing tip seems to be key.

#teammoth Another new one for my N.Wilts garden at the weekend. Clancy's Rustic, a recent coloniser.

Had a similar conundrum earlier in the year. Obs said Spiny 100% and the County Recorder agreed! Had Oaks since, and Obs has said 100% Oak. So, in my experience, Obs seems to sort these out.

#teammoth Bumper night on Sunday! Several NFG, Oak Hook-tip, Sharp-angled Peacock, Jersey Tiger, Clay Triple-lines, Chinese Character, Slender Brindle, European Corn Borer, Ypsolopha sequella.

#teammoth Obs says Spiny Hook-tip 100%. Came to light in my N.Wilts garden last night. Going on the Internet, cos none of my books have it in, I think that's likely correct! Welcome any comments, please #teammoth.

#teammoth Carcina quercana, a colourful little moth. It goes by the uninspiring common name of Long-horned Flat-body. When walking the long antennae wave about in front but as soon as it stops and rests it tucks them underneath and sits on them, the ends protruding out the back from under the wings.

Yes, definitely down on species by this time in the year, but nevertheless still a few new, previously not encountered, ones. You win some but loose a lot!

#teammoth Disappointing trap last night in my N.Wilts garden. A couple of new micros but nothing spectacular. High spot was this Tiger Crane Fly. The look of the scowl on this nearby fledgling Robin seemed to sum up my disappointment!

#teammoth Not such a large haul, compared to the other night, in my N.Wilts garden. But a few nice NFG. Campion, Lunar-spotted Pinion, Dark Umber, Dwarf Cream Wave. Seem to be getting a handful of new ones every trap! Which keeps it interesting.

Goshawk Summer by James Aldred, a beautiful evocative book. We all remember covid? A book about wildlife reclaiming the New Forest when humans were excluded. Only a handful of people were allowed access to the forest. It was a world most of us could never experience. @patrickbarkham.bsky.social

#teammoth Fair no. of species this morning, with 3 new for my N.Wilts garden. Pale Mottled Willow, May Highflyer and Orange Footman. Although the OF doesn’t seem quite right, albeit too early for Dingy Footman! Would welcome opinions, please.

What is going on #teammoth?! I thought it would be a good one last night in my N.Wilts garden - a warm day, reasonably mild night, a bit of cloud cover, no rain. This morning just 2 SS Darts, a Bumble Bee and a Cockchaffer in the trap! 2 more Darts and a Tachystola acroxantha outside. That's it!

As predicted #teammoth, best night of the year, so far, although the bar was very low! Streamer, Least Black Arches, Oak-tree Pug NFY, and Acleris Cristana (Obs ?) NFG. Camera broke so relying on phone for photos!

#teammoth Looks like things might be turning a corner in my N Wilts garden tonight! Lots of flying insects around the trap, including this, first to settle, Least Black Arches.

I think it's the lack of moths!? Generally feels very subdued on the flying insect front. Not seen much in the garden at all, compared to previous seasons! 🤞for the months to come.

I haven't mentioned this before but last Tuesday I drew a blank in the trap in my N Wilts garden! Only thing that saved me was a Brindled Beauty tucked under the lamp holder and a DS Pug that miraculously appeared in the garage after I'd put the equipment away!
