JWST images of all four gas giants in our Solar System. 🔭 🧪
The James Webb Space Telescope has captured stunning images of the gas giants in our solar system. The images show Saturn with its intricate rings, Jupiter with its swirling storms and bands, Uranus with its tilted rings and hazy atmosphere, and Neptune with its faint rings and dynamic weather patterns. These images reveal the beauty and complexity of these distant worlds and offer new insights into their formation and evolution.

It's not a difference of political opinions if the opposing side's opinion is that you aren't human or shouldn't exist. That's not how anything works.

Look to community. Look to friends and family who stood with us and who suffer the grief of this loss with us. In their company find comfort. And when you are ready to stand up and fight, I will be with you, too. We will prevail. For the light always defeats the darkness. /end

So don’t give up hope. Do not despair. That is what they want, and we shall not give them that satisfaction. In Japanese, there is a word my mother used to say to me. “Gaman, Georgie,” she’d say. It means to endure with fortitude and dignity. We all could benefit the spirit of Gaman. /5

I have faced fascism before, in this very country. I was one of 120,000 Japanese Americans summarily rounded up and expelled from our homes at gunpoint, all for the crime of looking like the people who bombed Pearl Harbor. I spent my childhood behind barbed wire. My parents lost everything. 1/

Love this. ‘Queue’ is from the French word with the same spelling (but pronounced as ‘kuh’) meaning an animal’s long tail. In the 18th and 19th centuries it also referred to a pigtail and was sometimes spelled as ‘cue’, which gave us the name of the long thin rod used in snooker.

Indeed. When they rounded up the Japanese Americans, myself and my family included, for internment during WWII out of fear over Japanese spies and saboteurs, two thirds of us were U.S. citizens. Don’t think it won’t happen again when they come for the “undocumented.”
Post from Latino pollster Mike Madrid:

“Doing some research for an upcoming article on the last “mass deportation” of Mexicans during the 1930’s.

Over half of those deported were US citizens.”

Today in relatable science: Gulls making a mysterious daily trip that turned out to be to a potato chip factory
A map of flight paths emanating from breeding colony of gulls, with this caption: Early on, LifeWatch noticed something odd. Most gulls were making daily trips to Mouscron, a city on the French border 65 km away. They went to investigate and found the birds bingeing on discarded snacks at the Roger & Roger potato factory.

The "Arecibo Message" was beamed towards globular cluster M13, in the constellation Hercules, #OTD in 1974. The broadcast took place during the dedication of an upgrade to the radio telescope. It was the first message sent with the intention of alerting extraterrestrials to life on Earth. 🧪 🔭 👽

One of the reasons why I left the dark place long ago, but never deleted my account, is that I would lose part of the history that happened via twitter, when it was still a good place. Such as this story behind the patchwork tartan map, connected to Scotland, Scottish independence, Brexit and hope.

Six years later, after I asked for this custom design. My main sentiment remains. Scotland still feels better than other places. Scotland still offers me hope. But independence is much needed and getting ever more urgent. The darker and more right the world shifts, the more light and hope we need 💙

It's been six years. I am still in Scotland. We are still not independent. Brexit has happened. Us new Scots were and keep being targeted. Xenophobia hasn't gone away and is getting worse. Politically world wide blaming immigrants everywhere for everything has become even more common. Six years.

And as this art work has found it's way onto the blue sky, I thought the story behind it should also make it here. I am not sure how long the dark site will survive, so didn't just wanted to link to it. Sadly Donna has closed her wee shop. But I know this map made it into many people's homes 🙂

Contd 8-Dec 2018: It is a truly stunning work of art and does make me emotional. It encompasses not only the welcoming nature of the Scotland that I love and call home, but also my love & fear of losing my home, and it highlights the diversity of Scotland and the people that make it what it is. /9

Continued: 8-Dec 2018: I've always loved the look of tartans, even long before calling Scotland my home. Many Scots have their own family tartan, or a tartan they are connected to and I always love to see someone wear it proudly. As a new Scot, I just adopted them all! 💙 /7

Continued 8-Dec 2018: The contrast couldn't be more stark. If you were born anywhere else (and that includes England, despite what some people want to make you believe!), I am sure you will feel welcome here. Of course we have our fair share of idiots, but they are outnumbered by good people! /6

Contd: 18-Dec 2018: These are scary times, with lots of uncertainty and anxiety. EU citizens are being used by the Tories as scapegoats & bargaining chips, called citizens of nowhere and queue jumpers. While Scotland calls us fellow Scots, friends & family, stands up for us and wants us to stay. /5

Contd: 18-Dec 2018: Right now, this welcoming Nation, faces being dragged out of the EU against our will. People like me, who call Scotland home, might be kicked out due to the hostile environment of the UK government and the Brexit madness the Tories caused. Scotland doesn't want this to happen. /4

Story continued: The rise in xenophobia elsewhere is in stark contrast to the attitude behind this test, which is very much that of a welcoming, inclusive nation, where nationality is based on civic identity. It truly does not matter where you came from, if you wish to make Scotland your home. /3
Quote by Dr John Davies (historian):

Scotland is, I think, for the whole of mankind an inspiring example of a country inhabited by people basing their nationality on civic rather than ethnic identity.

My story behind it: I call Scotland my home. But like so many new Scots, I wasn't actually born here. That difference doesn't really matter though. When I first mentioned my plans to move to Scotland, I was overwhelmed by the friendly welcome. And I was sent a Scottish citizenship test. /2
Scottish citizenship test diagram
Do you want to be Scottish?
Yes - ok you're in
No - aye you do - going back to the question Meme official citizenship test:

Do you want to live in Scotland?
Yes is ticked

That's it.
