Let me guess, France, Germany and Italy? Of course UK being a competitor they want to compete on equal terms, not providing advantages to UK

I guess that’s one for the “not serious” column. Funny, I expected better from Burnham.

Exactly. I'm.l glad the debate has opened. I even wrote a piece in @eastangliabylines.co.uk about how necessary that was. But let's also acknowledge he's said nothing positive about the Union and has not actually set out any action yet, which stands out in that speech

Nobody disputes what Sánchez and Macron said. Your sleight of hand is pretending two friendly quotations settle what 27 states would decide in an actual accession process. They don’t. Quotations still aren’t votes, however lovingly you curate them.

More the typical exceptionalist problem that a friendly quote means open season on cherry-picking

Fascinating chat with a diplomat from a major European country this week [...] The position, they say, is that #BrexitBritain wants broadly speaking full access to the European single market. However:

I think saying it makes it easier to deport failed asylum seekers - his main point this week - is unlikely to be persuasive in the medium term

1/ I defer to the experts here like Niall, but if Burnham is serious about rejoin, there needs to be a real effort made to educate the British public regarding the history and purpose of the EU.

…only if a unicorn deal is on offer…is worthless…since there will be no unicorn deal offered to the UK or any other applicant. We will have to wait and see what importance he puts on this subject. He needs to convince a lot of people. He doesn’t have unlimited time. 2029 will happen soon enough.

One thing that may have flown under the radar is the new PM pledged to change the electoral system and run on a campaign to do that in next GE I don’t think it can be overstated how much that will change the dynamics.

PS I suppose that makes potential UK accession very attractive in the short term? Might interest Jacob Öberg Chris Grey

Niall Ó Conghaile @nialloconghaile.bsky.social · 3h
And the window seems to be shutting on Western interest too, as betting is that a new French president will have a different idea on accession. This is not great for the states concerned, but they and their electorates have to look at themselves. It is a terrible blow for UvdL Ends

I think the least we expected from Burnham was far better "rhetoric" He is a politician by profession, and actually seems to like that he is unlike Starmer who hates politics, Sunak and Truss who were useless at politics and Johnson who was a crap journalist pretending to be a politican,or May 🤬

"This is the UK catching up on the missed decades since the financial crisis, at least in rhetoric." Id love Niall to be wrong here, but here he is unfortunately correct. Thats possibly (understatement alert) why it set such a positive wave. Unfortunately too, the UK is not alone on this.

Once again, the majority of British people think that they have a different future from ours. We can’t change that. All we can do is preventing them from destroying ours. And that’s much. Our red lines. No cherry picking. No distortion of EU rules. Let’s be simple allies ; let’s appreciate that.

Yes, saying that “Brexit has done more harm than good” is hardly a ringing endorsement of the benefits of being part of Europe In fact it makes you believe he actually thinks there are some positives from Brexit, just less than the negatives

I don't see how you can not have one. It would give the brexiters something to bang on about forever. Whereas an overwhelming win should mean no potential government would be able to go against it. How quickly do you think the Tories would pivot to pro rejoin if a ref gave a 60:40 rejoin result.

Some things are negotiable. Others aren't. The four freedoms aren't. Demanding market access without freedom of movement is not just cherry-picking in my opinion, but an attack on the integrity of the Single Market. Stop attacking the EU and take the bleeding Turkey deal (customs union).

Niall's argument is whether both the UK governments and the English are reall committed to the EU project, given the 40 odd years of Eurosceptism, opt outs and referendums on leaving.

Whatever about the lack of positivity on Europe, PM Burnham's speech was remarkable in other ways. A lot of people will be asking why our leaders can't be like that? This is the UK catching up on the missed decades since the financial crisis, at least in rhetoric.

Burnham is just going to kick the can further down the road and hope that those actually pro EU will accept a few nice words and nothing else as payment for their support of what remains a hard Brexit government.

It's clear he is doing this for party management, but I believe he acknowledges that Brexit hasn't worked out the way they hoped. The opportunity is to put pressure on him now to drop the exceptionalism and approach Europe positively
