Waiting for the next team to breakthrough. Nats, Caps, Hokies, Commanders and Mystics mostly.

That is dead even and I'm going to say the Yankees one was worse because the third base coach was actually positioned correctly and still fucked it up

Someone finally beat the Bob Hendley Jayson Werth send in the NLDS

"This is your brain on drugs" is more famous because they redid/replayed it a lot more. Which is also why "I learned it by watching you" should be the one more loved by Gen X since it belongs to them only.

Seeing the replay it's incredible he managed to score when Bob Sendley actually put a stop sign up.

That run from Tatís is pure home field advantage. The extra adrenaline from the crowd gave him the second he needed to make it.

It's funny how much of a hold '96-'03 has on my imagination as a baseball fan because I still think of the Yankees as the big bad and the Red Sox as the rootable underdogs even though the Red Sox have been significantly more successful over the last 15 years.

The microgeneration of nostalgia for the single wild card game and the 4-team College Football Playoff in 20 years is going to be so funny

You should look more into the fight over NOVA school calendars. The only thing everyone agrees with is that it's wrong but there are a million competing priorities that immediately splinter. For example, there's a large faction that want more full weeks of school so that summer break is longer.

Overall it's a weird article because it's written with the tone of being anti-child care subsidy but the point is actually that they should add a direct cash option for parents who do not choose full day center care.

James O'Hara @nextyeardc.com · 29/09/2026
Yeah he does a weird handwavey thing about how child care is $30K in Arlington but only $8K in southern VA so clearly it's an affordability issue only in Arlington that makes no sense.

James O'Hara @nextyeardc.com · 29/09/2026
To be fair that's covered in the article, but I don't really understand why the article is written so aggressively for what's a fairly minor disagreement in policy.

I thought I'd have a lot to say about the Women's World Road Race Championship and the Demi Vollering-Kasia Niewiadoma rivalry, and little to say about the men's race. Then Brandon McNulty and Team USA delivered a perfect, gutsy victory on Sunday. I haven't felt this alive watching sports in years.

I was thinking that though, if anyone tried to call Davey the "winningest manager" they would rightfully be laughed at

James O'Hara @nextyeardc.com · 28/09/2026
"Winningest manager" is a bizarre way to say "guy who has managed twice as many games as any other DBacks manager and is 4th in winning percentage among them"

With the preface that I generally agree with you, I would give the Nats a slight pass on this since it's clear they spent their time and resources in the offseason completely overhauling their entire front office and player development system to a level most teams do not when they change leaders.

Matt Stafford apparently decided he was a decade younger on that last play

James O'Hara @nextyeardc.com · 28/09/2026
What I've never understood is why one ref does not overrule the other on pass interference more often. The ref in front should have been able to see the receiver was grabbing the cornerback to induce the contact and call that off.

An extremely elaborate plan from Stafford to trick the Broncos defense into overcommitting to interceptions and giving up big plays

I know he won the game but the Ravens players seemed extra excited for Loop after how last season ended. That was really cool to see.

I'm mostly surprised by how spread out 30 Rock, Community, Parks and Rec and the Office (US) are. I know some of it is a product of the methodology but I figure if you remember to vote for one you'd remember the other ones too.

MLB’s youngest manager has exceeded expectations. So why can’t he be happy? (Gift Article)
Blake Butera led the Nationals to a surprisingly competitive year. Now he wonders if his hate of losing will help or hurt him in the future.

I think the best thing you can say for Butera based on preseason expectations (and previous managers here) is that he's clearly in charge and has the players' respect.

I was thinking of the London firefighting company fire marks and the myth of how they would only put out the fire if they saw their mark on the building and then it turns out that's insane and of course they just put out any fire because it's the right thing to do

This also highlights that the Dodgers' money advantage is not that they can sign every good player but that they don't really have to care when they make a bad signing.
