Latest: I wrote about internal ICE reviews---now deleted from ICE's website---revealing new details medical neglect in detention centers. The reports contradict DHS' public statements both generally and specifically about in-custody deaths reason.com/2026/10/01/i...
According to the internal report on Blaise's death, "A mortality review committee (MRC) determined BTC did not provide Ms. BLAISE medical care within the safe limits of practice."

The MRC found that, after Blaise collapsed, "1) BTC health staff deviated from basic life support (BLS) protocols; 2) Health staff failed to initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), despite Ms. BLAISE's pulselessness; and 3) Health staff did not include Ms. BLAISE's vital signs with their documentation of the emergency response."

The mortality report contradicts the public report ICE published on Blaise's death, which claimed that staff called for emergency medical services (EMS) and "immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation" and "continued providing CPR until EMS personnel arrived."

Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing.

Jacob Coxon
@hilbe..•16h
The people building Al earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.Jacob Coxon * @hilbe... • 16h g A common response is "if they truly believe this, why are they still building it?" At OpenAl, many have not deeply internalized the civilizational stakes. At Anthropic, the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first - they believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk.

Jacob Coxon @ @hilbe...• 16h
Accepting this race and entering the "endgame" is a hubristic gamble that should not be launched from a private company's Slack. Attempting to speedrun alignment should require extraordinary confidence that there are no better trajectories available.
Jacob Coxon
* @hilbe... • 16h g
I am optimistic about the potential for coordination. Warning shots like the Hugging Face attack have made pacing agreements between U.S. labs more viable. I don't feel like we're on track to prevent a global race, which may require costly actions such as a temporary ban on improving model capabilities.

Jacob Coxon * @hilbe... • 16h g If you are a lab researcher, I urge you to consider what the next few years will actually feel like. Do you want to kick off a superintelligent
RL run without a rigorous understanding of its mind? Should you put your head down because
"it's happening anyway" - or take this moment to call for different conditions?

Symbolic but still important; the Trump admin declares war on American communities. Secretary Mullin says DHS is "at war," so he's changing The Great Seal. This comes after dozens died in ICE custody and ICE officers have shot and killed multiple people this year, including two American citizens.
The Department of Homeland Security has decided that the agency needs a new official seal. Where the ubiquitous American eagle faced the direction of the olive branches in its right talon, now the eagle will face the opposite direction — towards the arrows it clasps in its other talon.

“We’re actually changing our seal to make it look towards the arrows because … when it looks towards the arrows is when it means we’re at war,” Secretary Markwayne Mullin revealed in a Fox News interview this weekend. “Homeland Security is at war every single day against bad actors trying to hurt our backyards, and we’re not gonna allow that to happen.”

So in other words, the United States is at war here at home — but Iran somehow isn’t a war. What?

In October 1945, seven weeks after the Japanese surrender in World War II, President Harry Truman issued Executive Order 9646, the first order in American history to define the great seal in legal language, with the eagle’s head codified as facing toward the olive branch. Truman said it was to reflect the new world of peace. Churchill quipped: “Why not put the eagle’s neck on a swivel so that it could turn to the right or left as the occasion presented itself?”

'What America Did to Me Is Wrong': Inside One of the Largest Third-Country Removal Flights So Far
BY GILLIAN BROCKELL
AUGUST 31, 2026
On July 31, an estimated 71 detainees were expelled to various countries on a hellish flight to Africa. Many were then illegally returned to their home countries.For the first few hours of the
Immigration and Customs Enforcement flight over the Atlantic Ocean, Mohamed Barry continued to act like himself, which is to say, he expected to be visible to the people around him.
So as GEO Group flight security guards stood over him and the other shackled passengers, chatting casually with each other, he asked them what country he was going to be deported to. They didn't answer.
When the guards started drinking from red and blue plastic cups and the smell of alcohol wafted over to his seat, he asked one of them point-blank, "Are you guys allowed to drink on the job?" No response.Then a man from Eritrea or Somalia, Barry isn't sure which, began to beg the guards to let him use the lavatory. Barry chimed in with an appeal to decency, telling the guards, "Please consider us as human beings." But the guards were boisterous by that point, he said, and they didn't appreciate the man's increasingly loud and desperate pleas crashing their party.
Barry watched as a guard turned and looked at the man dead in the face and said, "You. Can pee on. You." Another guard laughed.
"After seeing that, I just kept my head down," Barry, 52, told me over the phone last week.
