Finding the one mod that's been quietly ruining your whole game experience is truly the modern day needle in a haystack, a moment that is both triumphant and absolutely infuriating from top to bottom

Tonight was Massive Undertakings Night. Spud's still putting together the various things we'll need to have a safe & steady nuclear power operation, I'm partway through placing 160 refineries to make just one item, and Nyx? She's building a late-game factory from base ore. Huge project!

Satisfactory video game screenshot: Three exhausted Pioneers perched high above the swamp. In the background is part of a sprawling huge factory. It's night, and a ringed gas giant planet dominates the sky.

Formal affordances are the elements that pull a player toward certain actions, they “cry out” for the player to take those actions. Material affordances are the actions a system actually allows the player to take. Agency occurs when the two are in balance. (Mateas 2001)

My modded Fallout playthrough's dead in the water because, not once but twice, I got about 15 hours in before my saves started getting corrupted and causing infinite loading screens. And none of the conventional wisdom I could find online was capable of fixing it. I sneakily suspect Win11.

Fuck ChatGPT flyers. The future is broadsheets.

A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:
Forget ChatGPT Flyers
Say it with
Broadsheets
Unlimited fonts
Stretch them
Or cram a really long sentence into one line for no good reason
No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase
Pointing hands
(They're called manicules!)
Don't be left behind
Broadsheets are the future

Shuffling through the RiffTrax free shorts playlist - Pros: Dense retro Americana pairs extremely well with playing Fallout New Vegas Cons: Frequently features kids / teenagers being standoffish / depressed for perfectly fair reasons as the universe berates / punishes them for not cheering up

Lots of shocking things happening in Gurran Lagann, but one of the big ones is that Rossiu is that one guy from Space Mutiny

Rossiu after the timeskip. He's in a fashy-coded white uniform with a high collar, his long dark hair is pulled back in a ponytail, with one long strand over his face.

I've been incidentally learning far more about modern finance as a result of keeping an eye on the GenSlop situation, and, like... Guys, it feels like some of these financial mechanisms are abominations that should not have existed in the first place, even before the GenSlop bubble.

Friendly reminder that Duolingo was initially concieved to trick people into translating articles for free, which they later used as training data for MTL algorithms. Duolingo's primary purpose has NEVER been about teaching you a language, even from the start! slate.com/technology/2...

If it doesn’t charge users and, so far, doesn’t serve them any ads, how does Duolingo make money? It tricks you into working as an unpaid translation service. At the end of some lessons, Duolingo will ask you if you want to practice by translating a real-world document. Which will turn out to be, say, a BuzzFeed article. By melding together enough stabs at this task from high-level Duolingo users, the app can render a surprisingly accurate translation. Which is worth good money. So far, Duolingo has contracts with BuzzFeed and CNN to translate stories from English into languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This service is already earning Duolingo hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but von Ahn predicts he will be adding a raft of new clients soon. “The language translations market is huge,” he says. “It’s a $30 billion per year market.”

What if the AI labs are trying to get their LLMs to loop into making new and improved models, but like everything else they're just very bad to middling at it, so they claim to investors that we're at rapid self-improvement when in reality it's more like automated self-sabotage

Keeping spoilers to a minimum, there's a moment in the latest GW2 expac where your character temporarily ascends and gains a special power. This power is different per class. For Shuuti, my Engineer? The Big Gun. "With this power, I realize my infinite potential!" [pulls out rocket launcher]

So it warms the cockles of my heart to see so many of them having a full meltdown about the recent set. Enjoy!!
