How Academic Science Gave Its Soul to the Publishing Industry
Self-governance of science was supposed to mean freedom of inquiry, but it also ended up serving the business model of scientific publishers while undermining the goals of science policy.

He eventually sold Pergamon to Elsevier for £440 million. Then he fell off his yacht under mysterious circumstances, leaving behind evidence of massive pension fund fraud, debts everywhere, and a publishing model that scientists are still trying to escape.

The rest of the industry took notice and copied his playbook. Today a handful of publishers dominate academic science with massive profit margins, built on a model where the labor is free and the customers can't say no. Maxwell got rich not from his tabloids, but from science.

Justin Kiggins @neuromusic.bsky.social · 03/04/2026
Between 1959 and 1965, Pergamon grew from 40 journal titles to 150. Maxwell wined and dined editors, locked down exclusive contracts, and expanded relentlessly. He understood that demand was essentially captive. Researchers need access, so libraries have to pay.

Justin Kiggins @neuromusic.bsky.social · 03/04/2026
Starting in the 1950s with Pergamon Press, Maxwell flipped the old model on its head. Instead of waiting for scientific societies to propose journals, he went to academics and proposed journals to them. Every new title was a new product to sell to university libraries.

Justin Kiggins @neuromusic.bsky.social · 03/04/2026
Before Maxwell, scientific journals were mostly run by professional societies as a public good. Nobody was getting rich off them. Maxwell saw an opportunity everyone else missed: researchers provide content for free, do peer review for free, and then their universities pay to read it.

Last month the NYT said AOC "struggled" to give an answer on Taiwan and quoted her with "uhs" and "ums" to make her look stupid Yesterday talking about Hormuz Trump claimed he's heard from "numerous countries" and said "uh" four times. The NYT deleted the "uhs" and paraphrased him to look smarter:
NYT on Feb. 13, 2026:

The visit also demonstrated the relative foreign policy inexperience of Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, who has made a few overseas trips since taking office but does not sit on any House committees devoted primarily to world affairs. She struggled at times to formulate succinct answers at a nighttime panel session, during which she was asked probing and specific questions about how to respond to international crises.

Questioned about whether the United States should send troops to defend Taiwan if China invaded the island, she stalled for roughly 20 seconds before offering a substantive response.

“I think that, uh, this is such a, a — you know, I think that — this is a, um — this is of course, a, uh, a very longstanding, um, policy of the United States,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said, before saying that the country should try to avoid reaching that point with China in the first place.NYT on March 16, 2026:

On Monday, Mr. Trump claimed that “numerous countries have told me they’re on the way,” noting that President Emmanuel Macron of France would most likely help in the Strait of Hormuz and was an eight out of 10. “Not perfect, but it’s France,” he said.

Others are not demonstrating sufficient enthusiasm for his demands, he said.

If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.
