None of this is against embodiment research, which has been a game changer for the study of the mind. It's a call to hold the embodied self to a higher standard. Skipping those considerations risks leading the field to an old, well-documented trap where less body is taken to mean less self.

NeuroLeyla @neuroleyla.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
Disability is problematic for the embodied self too. The phenomenology of disabled embodiment is well described. But the cognitive neuroscience of the embodied self mostly passes it over, keeping the able body as an unspoken default of a whole self.

NeuroLeyla @neuroleyla.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
Race is another case The embodied self is built from the inside, from one's own bodily signals. But race is imposed from outside, in how the observer marks the body. Fanon expounded on this. But cognitive neuroscience still leaves the problem of marginalized body, marginalized self to the wayside.

Pregnancy was the paper's seed. Who is the pregnant body in the eyes of an embodied-self researcher? If one body can hold more than one self, the theory's arithmetic breaks.

NeuroLeyla @neuroleyla.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
My unease is with what the phrase suggests: a self that equates with a body. The relationship has been qualified to avoid the implications of equating body with self, but, in my view, that exercise hasn't been done convincingly or thoroughly.

1/ Pleased to share my latest preprint: The Body Problem: Cautionary Notes on the Embodied Self. Like many others, I've been fascinated by embodiment research the past few years, but at the same time sat very uncomfortably with the term "embodied self." 🧵https://osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/jg2nr_v1
