Just speaking for film & TV there isn't really a job loss due to AI. It's been mostly due to successive punches of pandemic, streaming collapse, union strikes, studio consolidation and interest rates. This trend was in place way before Midjourney was pumping out pictures with 14 fingers.

Oh mannn I didn't even live in Tornado Alley, but my parents also always told this story about how there was a tornado that passed right by our house 10 years before I was born so that did not help haha. I also got kind of obsessed watching Twister on repeat even though it scared me haha

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child? Twister-- mostly because it was a tangible possibility (rare but not impossible) that a tornado really could appear in the middle of the night out of nowhere and destroy our house

I also get very annoyed whenever anyone tries to put any blame on the writer's strike because the industry was already showing signs of decline before then. Animation writers weren't on strike (if they were covered by the animation guild) and animation employment still took a huge nosedive

(And also tied to why they have to constantly raise the price of their streaming services and introduce ads. Because as annoying as the cable TV model was for consumers.... it worked because of the ad revenue it brought in).

It's what led to studios looking to cut corners in all sorts of ways as a result-- whether this be greenlighting fewer shorter projects, outsourcing more cheap non union labor, or investing money that could have gone to more new projects into AI to try hedge their bets for the future.

I still think that studios attempting to copy Netflix and throwing everything into streaming and the binge watching model only to realize it wasn't profitable in the way cable TV and theater releases were... has played a greater role in project and job decline than most people talk about

I try to hammer this home in the unfortunately many conversations I have with non-creative normies about the state of games, animation, etc. They have all been lead to think AI is replacing us, and it’s just not true. The money people have by and large just tossed us aside for a shiny new toy!
