Many thanks to Claire Stainfield for taking the time to talk to members yesterday, about her fascinating PhD research on seals and disturbance. A thoroughly enjoyable and informative visit to beautiful Newburgh (with cake and coffee to bring the trip to a close). #marinemammals #pinniped
A Grey Seal in water - head showing above water, in profile, facing right.Three people on a wooden-fenced viewing platform, looking out over Ythan estuary mouth. One is pointing and the others are looking in the same direction through binoculars. Sunny conditions with blue sky and fine weather clouds.A mass of Grey Seals in the distance along a sandbar. Little detail is visible of individual seals. The sea behind looks a bit rough and a large shop is on the horizon. Around 25 gulls are resting on sand to the nearside from the seals.Around ten people on a wooden decking area with rope handrails around the outside and Ythan estuary mouth in the background. Most folks are facing away from the camera. It is sunny, with blue sky and scattered fine-weather clouds.

What is going on? There was an unprecedented spike in Nathusius' Pipistrelle #Bats numbers during last September's migration, so are numbers this year just bats that didn't return east this spring? Note 2026 part year! @batconservation.bsky.social @mammalsociety.bsky.social @nesmammals.bsky.social

We had a fantastic evening last Friday, helping with the Aberdeen-wide Bioblitz. Eleven mammal species detected by a range of methods in Seaton Park. Firstly, some mammals that we saw in the flesh: Rabbit and Common Seal (1/4)

Clear highlight of our field outing to Gight Wood at the weekend was a (brief) Pine Marten sighting. No photos of that, alas, but plenty of mammal signs among the 12 or so mammal species detected.
Two larch cones. The one on the right is complete while the one on the left has been nibbled down by a Wood Mouse (or Wood Mice) to a neat core.A small molehill among grass, with a bank of grass behind and partly over the molehill. An Otter spraint on a stone shelfSome Badger hair caught on barbed wire. A reminder that some areas of prime mammal habitat receive very little mammal recording activity. This is especially true in some of our large forests that provide some of the most extensive habitat for Red Squirrels.

We're sorting 2025 data for the NE Scotland Mammal Report. The map here (all records) shows the usual good coverage around Aberdeen and the major glens with sparser recording in the north and the mountains. Created in #QGIS using @fieldstudiesc.bsky.social's TomBio plugin.
