there's a whole section on this nonsense in the yet unreleased Faggot Games III, which i've decided to paste part of here. for context, this section begins by discussing the barcode '666' panic of the 1980s:

If you’re not aware, online storefronts for games (video and analog) have increasingly targeted erotic and thematically challenging games for delisting. This is due to the online and bank-based payment providers that they use, which are increasingly buying into a global (and often eerily quiet) outrage against online queer, radical and erotic art. On itch.io, this moral panic has taken the form of delisting games from search or making it impossible to purchase them at all.

If the way you sell or distribute your games requires any purchase through itch, you’re fucked unless you’re keeping up-to-date on which Itch.io tags are financially evil. I have bent and twisted the tags of many of my games just to avoid the scanner that makes your games unreachable, and I still don’t keep a solid eye on what’s been delisted. I think you can put “adult” or “nsfw” on an Itch game nowadays, but I’m not your lawyer or your mom, to be clear.

The only means of mitigating this is personal choice, like changing the tags on your game, or not including certain words in your game’s description, or only including certain genitalia in your game’s pictures. I’m a communist, so “personal choice”, as a solution for problems caused by institutions with open phone lines, is not enough.

I had one of my games, Don't Test My Love, completely removed from Itch because I properly tagged it with ‘incest’. I was allowed to put it up again, and I chose to not charge for it anymore - I'm not sure if I'm allowed to charge for it anymore! It's heartbreaking, and I got the lighter end of it. Go and try to play Praise The Hawkmoth King or Suzi on Itch, and you'll find them completely unavailable, their pages stripped to plain text and a white background.

The best we can do is yell at money, and when our peers align with money, yell at our peers.
