Actually, Americans are just like you. ~20-30% of them genuinely support fascism, as in ~every 🇪🇺 country. You are just more fortunate to have political institutions & a multiparty system that prevent that 20-30% from fully capturing the center-right party, becoming 51%, & controlling the government.

Bin Laden while a Saudi national, was not on good terms with the Saudi government. He was being hosted and supported by the Taliban.

Here in NL a company doing layoffs must let people go roughly proportionate to their age group presence. So no firing all the new kids in a company with a mostly older workforce.

I was kinda surprised driving around the western US last year how accurate the media (GTA, really) depiction of rural America as dilapidated was.

I have premium because I hate ads yeah. I also like that apparantly more money goes to the actual creators I like watching. It also came with YouTube music which I use.

Thankfully Mechanical Engineering is a trade and not a academic discipline.

Interesting that burning through resources is more common. I assumed most people had my anxiety about spending resources because what if I need them later?

It's fine, I don't know anything about education in Asia either.

NeonLiberal @neonliberal.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Oh yeah our high school is completely different. Only the top 17% are on the pre research university track. You can get into a research university without, I did. But it requires jumping through some educational hoops. It's definitely not without it's downsides.

Somehow they and us manage without Gen Ed. Engineering traditionally was indeed "vocational" in the Dutch systems to the extent that you only studied engineering at a seperate Technische Hogeschool instead of a Universiteit. Engineering is a vocation and that's fine tbh.

I do feel extremely sorry for this guy who for the crime of misunderstanding how American universities work (for Americans reading, many other countries have no concept of minors, you only take classes in what your degree is in), is being dogpiled like he said history classes are evil

If you don't think the 1950s US creation of Gen Ed requirements is superior why argue against people who don't see the need for them? I appreciate history, actually did a 30ects minor in it. I'm still glad it wasn't a mandatory part of my degree and I stand by the value of our degrees.

Which is weird right? It's not like we don't have humanities programs or professors over here.

Every American student* Whole countries in Europe don't do Gen Ed. Somehow we haven't collapsed (yet).

NeonLiberal @neonliberal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
That's not so much a thing in Europe no. This guy studied in Scotland it seems.

NeonLiberal @neonliberal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Same for the Netherlands and I think also Germany. Maybe the rest of Europe?

NeonLiberal @neonliberal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I'm not coming at this from a RoI perspective. You can get a government subsided film and literature degree here and you nobody is going to force you to take physics or business classes or whatever either and that's great!

NeonLiberal @neonliberal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
But why are they deficient though foreign universities can function without Gen Ed? If things are universally important to everyone you should teach them in high school where everyone has to go.

NeonLiberal @neonliberal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
He isn't saying that someone would always choose engineering over history if they could or that engineering majors could breeze through history. Just that American style Gen ed requirements are kinda silly imho.
100
NeonLiberal @neonliberal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I think it's not a dunk and his point is misread. He is expressing bewilderment that a engineering student is forced to study history. That's not necessarily how things work in the rest of the world. He wouldn't study history in university because it wouldn't be required of him.

What do you think of countries that don't have a liberal arts model? I find this American idea your education is incomplete if you don't spend a year doing stuff unrelated to your degree kinda silly tbh.
110
NeonLiberal @neonliberal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Reality is many non US universities don't subscribe to the liberal arts model and it's annoying to see Americans act like that means they're deficient. Meanwhile their own education system led to whatever the fuck is going on over there. So I don't believe liberal arts prevent fascism.

I did a history minor in my Dutch engineering degree for fun but we had no requirement to do any humanities and neither did we force humanities to do math. No Gen ed seems to work fine if your high school education is on point.

I liked the middle ground Cyberpunk had between the Bethesda approach and true size. I don't need to explore the dwellings of every random npc. Bethesda moved a bit in this direction with starfield but not nearly far enough to be convincing in a grounded scifi setting.

They don't have the means to fight Iran, kinda busy. Saying some words in support of the countries fighting Iran is materially cheap. Ukraine is going to do whatever gets them the most support of the west aligned nations because without it they cease to exist. I fully support them tbh.

Iran provided the munitions raining on their heads for a while so yeah they're going to stand with whoever opposes Iran. I'm gonna bet that if the anti Junta forces had any hope of getting substantial help from outside they would take it too, don't care who.

To be clear I'm not optimistic. Quite possible this all ends in successful genocide of either population. Advantage Israel right now. If Russia does something truly the stupid in the Baltics every Euro leader might just give Israel free reign just to get them on our side for example.

Seems much more realistic to pressure them on than single state IMHO. Economic pressure can shove a unpopular deal down their throat that doesn't actually affect the daily lives of Israelis inside 1967. Single state however is going to destroy Israeli life as they know it. Much harder sell.

Iirc 1967 borders are the internationally most recognized borders Iirc. Also if you want as many countries on board as possible for effective leveraging sanctions that helps.
