OK out of my usual late medieval France wheelhouse, but @ahannahim.bsky.social came up with my new favorite summary of the Icelandic saga and I just had to share it with you all (with permission of course!) 😂
Greyscale etching (?) of some very serious beardy men in viking-style clothes walking through a rugged landscape. The caption reads "Aasgrim med følge kommer til Snorre Godes bod. Se side 345."

From the salt(?) marshes at Snape, the dead tree looked a bit spooky. This tree stands alongside the path through the marsh towards St Botolph’s church.
A dead tree is silhouetted against a cloudy, grey sky. The tree is just branches, no leaves, no twigs. It looks a bit spooky. In the foreground are grasses and reefs growing in the salt marsh. In the distance is a wooded area, which is a dark green.

In Birmingham today and walked past this great piece of street art of a magpie.
A piece of street art in Birmingham. It’s a magpie, in an angular style, done in blue and white, against a grey background. The magpie looks over its shoulder. Its head is to the right, looking left.

Walking shortly after sunrise this morning & came across a bunch (a parliament?) of rooks sitting in a tree. Managed to get a photo before they took off over the fields.
A black and white photo. It shows 9 rooks (probably rooks anyway) sitting in various branches of a tree sillohetted against a grey sky. The tree’s branches are also against the grey sky and have no leaves. The photo has a bit of a moody feel to it.

Four new insights from the latest beaver research 🔍 From the first total carbon budget on beaver-engineered wetlands to the recovery of populations of IUCN Red List species, here are some of the latest findings 👇 1/2
Beavers can convert stream corridors to persistent carbon sinks
Open access | Published 18 March 2026
When extrapolating across all floodplain areas in Switzerland suitable for beaver recolonisation, beaver-driven carbon burial could offset approximately 1.2–1.8% of the country’s annual carbon emissions, achieved solely through a nature-based solution requiring no active management or direct costs.Beavers are boosting rare snail populations in Norfolk
Open access | Published 27 May 2026
At just 2–2.5mm tall, the Desmoulin’s whorl snail (Vertigo moulinsiana) is one of the UK’s most protected invertebrates and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. With a dispersal rate of less than five metres per year, recovery can be slow.

Abrehart Ecology has monitored the River Wensum area for the snails for 25 years. At Sculthorpe Moor nature reserve: then a graph showing a sharp rise in snail numbers after the beavers arrived.Beaver wetlands are integral to reinstating dynamic ecological processes
Open access | Published 01 March 2026
Beaver wetlands are integral to reinstating dynamic ecological processes that provide refugia for multiple taxonomic groups, supporting taxa otherwise absent from the landscape. Our findings hint at the scale of past biodiversity loss associated with beaver-dependent wetlands, while offering a glimpse of what could be gained from their ongoing population recovery.
Using eDNA to study the biodiversity impacts of beaver activities
Open access | Published 16 May 2026
Beaver-modified streams supported distinct and, in several respects, more diverse aquatic communities compared to the control stream. Although vertebrate alpha diversity did not differ significantly between spatial groups, overall vertebrate occurrences were higher at beaver sites, with notable increases in amphibian taxa, stickleback, and semi-aquatic mammals such as water vole and water shrew.

Hi everyone 💚🐝 Birmingham City Council are currently reviewing their maintenance contracts so please email your Councillors to make sure our new Council prioritises a ban on public pesticides like glyphosate Check who represents you, get in touch, template attached www.birmingham.gov.uk/councillors
[suggested template for Bee Friendly Brum councillor contact]

Hello, Cllr. [YOUR COUNCILLOR'S NAME] congratulations on being elected to represent [YOUR CONSTITUENCY NAME].

In 2021, concerned local mums Bee Friendly Brum petitioned Birmingham City Council to try and ban the use of sprayed pesticides (including glyphosate) in our public spaces and residential streets.

This very successful campaign produced a petition with over 97,500 signatures nationally (10,000+ from Brum), and triggered a scrutiny meeting.
But very little has changed from that action.
In fact, despite promises to reduce pesticide use and eventually end the practice, spraying has increased!

There is so much evidence of the harm that glyphosate causes to pollinators, soil, animal and human health. I will share some more information about the campaign and the issues with pesticide spraying below in case you are unfamiliar with it, and look forward to hearing back from you on this matter.

Kind regards,

Well, if it’s 22 June, it must be the 1,817th anniversary of St Alban’s head being forcibly detached from the rest of him, causing his executioner’s eyes to pop out. Unless it’s the 1,775th anniversary. Or the 1,722nd, obviously. Accounts vary 🧵
Medieval drawing shows a man on the left, standing, wielding his sword with one hand. It is halfway through Alban’s neck, and blood is coming out of the wound. Alban is kneeling, almost on all fours. Above him, the executioner’s other hand is free, and he’s catching his eyes, which have popped out.
