#Moon & #Flowers - William #Morris #textile design #art This seems more like a painting than something for fabric. What a gorgeous scene Morris created here-1 of many Moon-themed designs. We chose this one for the #Autumnal colours in its framing border of🍁 #leaves & blooms before a huge Full Moon…
Beneath a large Full Moon in a deep turquoise night sky, Morris has created a rich scene: a foreground of symmetrical layered hillsides form the base of a border at the bottom, made up of fallen Autumnal leaves amidst many daisy-like flowers that seem to grow up the length of the two bare trees on either side. It makes such a beautiful “window” to the scene beyond: faraway, dark slopes topped with what look like short-needled fir trees in silhouette. At this point all trees seem leafless or spare, even the distant evergreens. And yet, in the forefront there’s Life in all its Seasons of rich beauty, forming that lovely “frame” that starts with the bed of colourful Autumn leaves below mixed with tiny flowers, continuing upward on both sides with many more flowers, everything done in such rich colours and detail…Even the night sky is an unusual shade of turquoise, with its strata of misty clouds and several tiny white-dot stars all beautifully lit by the enormously Full Moon, which itself is partly hidden by silhouettes of bare branches and glimpses of flowers that seem transparent and golden against its bright light. How Morris imagined this for use in textiles We do not know. It is, as said, one of so many Moon and flowers (or simply Moon) designs he created, many of which were advertised on posters for an exhibition of them. We would gladly have this as a large print on our wall, so beautiful it is. ~💞

Where do souls go at life’s end Perhaps only a boatman can say Perhaps only Charon knows the way to an isle of transition A restful place with no decisions Island of the dead isn’t vindictive only Cypress trees glass seas and light #vss365 #ipoetrysky #Emoetry #poetsofbluesky #ECK 🎨 Böcklin
Arnold Böcklin
The Island of the Dead, 1883
(Die Toteninsel) Version 3

The Island of the Dead is the most well known painting of Swiss Symbolist artist Arnold Böcklin (1827–1901).

Description:
A boatman ferries a lone figure garbed in white to a rocky island with gorgeous Cypress trees, surrounded by glass-like waters.

Böcklin provided no public explanation as to the meaning of the painting but described it as a 'dream picture.'

The title was coined by art dealer Fritz Gurlitt in 1883.

Not knowing the painting's history, some observers interpret the oarsman as the boatman Charon, who ferried souls to the underworld in Greek mythology. The water, either River Styx or the River Acheron.

Poem text by Kate LaDew:

I saved a spider from drowning in a glass of water

without knowing I was,
tossing whatever was between my fingers into the kitchen sink
as it uncoiled I opened a cabinet
retrieved a roll of paper towels,
and as deftly as a president in a room full of hurricane survivors
snapped off a sheet, in one motion
smashed the spider, gathered it up,
crumpled the paper towel and buried it deep in the trash
I've felt bad about this all day
the ghost of a living thing still moving between my fingers
my aversion to creepy-crawly things
overwhelming my need
to protect anything smaller and weaker than me
I imagine myself falling into somewhere
clear and heavy that knocks my breath away,
and, just when I'm sure this is the end,
feel my body rise, cold air rushing past,
gulping it in, wondering if maybe angels do exists,
ready to believe in everything, only to feel myself breaking,
swallowed up with force and it all goes dark.
maybe it's just a bug, maybe it wasn't adding much to society,
maybe it's no big deal because there's a million more like 'em in the world
and maybe I'll take a minute next time before I whip the paper towels out,
because maybe somebody out there feels that way about me, too.

Poem text by Kate LaDew:

a few sandwiches short of a picnic

but we'll make do
I tear our lonely sandwich in half
and give one half to you
the ants stay away, out of pity, no doubt,
so we lie on the grass, stare up at the sky,
and begin to count,
one dragon,
one unicorn,
one crocodile,
one whale,
two dolphins,
three elephants,
four pirate ships setting sail,
imagination slides slow slow slow across the blue,
if we spent our whole lives counting clouds
I think that would be enough for me and you

And so it began in the heart of a hurricane impatient love and hate beat down everything #vss365 #hurricane #writesky #poetsofbluesky #poetrysky #photography #photoart #EastCoastkin #ECK #WCK 💙📷 me (Full text in ALT)
Hurricane

Dust swirled between us
Between you and me
and the sticky seat
of a beat up lorry

Hot breeze
whipped my tattered slip
as we rambled on
past dry rivers of emotion
tension stretched out
time and pulse beat on

I stared out of the window
out of myself, and thought
Disappointment
could break a lesser heart

Resistance
drove me away from you
Simple proof
the wind steers on its own

And so it began
in the heart of a hurricane
Impatient love and hate
beat down everything

Shallow traces of reluctance
once found on your face
must have been grief

A moment of truth passed
between you and me
on the sticky seat
of a beat up old lorry.
