ORIENTALS IN THE SCHOOLS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE UNION─
Sir: Your editorial of Monday morning concerning the conditions of the schools in Lincoln and other placed confronted by the problem of the "yellow peril" should make our own townspeople take a good look at conditions here in Sacramento.

Do you know how many hundred Oriental children are mixed up with white children in the public schools of this city? You would be amazed if you found out. Are you mothers and fathers of little boys and girls willing to have your children forced to associate with Japanese and Chinese children during so many days of so many months of all their childhood years? Think deep! Think deep! Do you say: "It doesn't hurt my little girl to have a Japanese in the room with her." "It can do no harm to my Bobby if there are Chinese children in his class."

But have you ever visited an Oriental class on a warm day? Do you know that even on cold, cold days the windows of their classrooms must stand wide open? Do you stop to consider that while no harm may come, no degrading practice be witnessed in the schoolroom under the supervision of the ever-watchful teacher, the teacher is not always with your children. The toilets are common to all the children. Your little boy of 6 or 7 must sometimes be in the toilet with Orientals 14, 15, or 16 years old. And it is at such times and in such places that the vilest seeds are sowed and cultivated.

The schools are yours. Don't you know it? Why don't you take an interest in them? You say the federal law prevents the establishment of separate schools. I believe you are mistaken. The federal law says that the children of citizens of the most favored nations shall not be excluded from the public schools. Can not you see your solution of that? It is not difficult. Ask your city superintendent of schools to ascertain the total number of Oriental children attending your public schools and if the number is considerable, ask your commissioners to build a separate school for them which shall be preparatory to the eighth grade.

You will thereby keep well within the limitations of the federal law. You will not be excluding them from the public schools but you will hold them apart from your children until the last year of the grammar school and s will prevent the forced association of children of tender years with Orientals many years their seniors. If your schools are to be improved now is the time to suggest improvements and ask for them, now before all the money is spent.
