Rarely shuts up about sustainable energy. (Also likes TTRPGs, art, history, weird science, own voice; anti-AI) Chris Wright, Sec of Energy, says those things because he has $60 million of his money in his fossil company. Nazi Punks Fuck Off. he/him

1. So solar+battery's not truly dispatchable , but you can move the solar power you DO get to any time of that same day. 2. Again, all these numbers are VERY rough, and I haven't checked in the last 3-5 years.

I had an old, crude theory: Very roughly four watt-hours of battery cost the same as a watt of solar, which will generate about four watt-hours on a normal day. [1] And both are, like, half the price they were three years ago. [2] So for the cost of solar three years ago, it's now semidispatchable.

Someone said supervillains were based on the real villains that Stan Lee et al. had seen: mobsters, dictators, etc. and that's why we see echoes of supervillains in later generations of real villains. In Trump's specific case people are deliberately modeling on actual 1930's history.

India may be easier than most places. Most of India is in the tropics, so doesn't really have winter* . I don't know what the weather patterns are like at all, but that's gotta help with seasonality.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

Now I want to write one just so all the insane preppers get their, like, diarrhea lettuce, ruined o-rings, and bad crops. While the friendly gardeners and people who share their stuff do ... hmm. They do badly, just less so. (I offer a little blacksmithing and a no-bleach trick for drinkable water.)

Trad. claims/disclaims: I do this because there aren't enough ways for people to find good nonbestsellers. More happy authors= more good books. Most of these books have gay characters, trans characters, people like that [sic] living their lives and if you don't want that, there's other books.

12. Not Here To Make Friends, Jodi McAllister. I love the bizarre setups for romance novels- in this case, it's on the set of a totally-not-the-Bachelor reality show. With a quarantine bubble. Apparently this is so over the top because there were two books leading up to this one, but it's glorious.

11. Direct Descendant, Tanya Huff. Two women meet cute in a town full of spooky magical menaces. Like "there aren't any fish in the lake- it's not pollution, there's a lake monster." Lots of fun.

10. Bodies of Magic, Freya Marske. A bunch of magical healers are about to take their finals when they find the body of the would-have-been valedictorian. I'm an old cranky guy but I cared about these teenagers a lot. Mystery, magic, medicine.

9. True Color, by Kory Stamper. [Nonfiction] How do you define colors when all you have is words? This is about the color definitions in Merriam-Webster's Third Edition, which requires discussing lexicographic weirdos, color weirdos, World War 1, feminism, etc.

8. All The Crooked Saints, Maggie Stiefvater. YA. I'm going to reveal my barbarism: my tagline for this was "What if magical realism didn't suck?" It's about miracles, and immigration, and 1960s rock and roll, and families and communication and it's lovely and smart.

7. Leave The Lights on, Elizabeth Dunn and Jiaying Zhao [nonfiction]. Aimed directly at my personal interests, hope other people love it too. A psych prof testing "what makes students happy" finds out doing climate stuff makes them happier than doing stuff "to make them happy". [...]

6. A Half-Built Garden, Ruthanna Emrys. This is ... diaperpunk? It's great. Aliens come to rescue is from the climate-ruined Earth and we're like "I THINK WE CAN STILL FIX IT." Aliens are found by an eco-anarchist who comes out to see what the chemical spill is in her wetland, bringing her baby.

5. This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me, Ilona Andrews. I've bounced hard off "I fell into my favorite fantasy universe" books, but this one worked for me. Really well. There's one point where she's sitting through a flowery speech and I was like "Of course they talk like that. It's a book like that." *

4. The Devils, Joe Abercrombie. It has all the virtues and flaws of a Joe Abercrombie book and it's very good at what it does. Fast, funny, violent, and all the characters have actual character. Alternate history where magic works and the Papacy has a deniable suicide squad made up of monsters.
