yesterday we got to experience actually carving these letters ourselves using various different stone types, tools and methods, which helps us to better understand the development and choice of particular letter forms. The research is funded by @researchireland.ie and based @maynoothuniversity.ie

Spent a very enjoyable, informative and productive day yesterday experimenting with letter-carving under the superb guidance of stone sculptor and letter-carver Aileen Anne Brannigan. On the EMISoS project, we are analysing the palaeography of early medieval Irish inscriptions on stone monuments but
using a chisel and mallet to carve letters into stoneworkbench with stone carved with letters in Insular Irish scriptsun shining through window onto work bench with tools, carved stone and rubbing of the carving

Located next to a small holy well, not far from Kilmovee in County Mayo, this ogham stone may be one of the earliest recorded in Ireland based on its inscription. When translated, it reads: ALATTOS MAQI BR[--. (see the excellent Oghamin3D ogham.celt.dias.ie/stone.php?la...) #Ireland #Archaeology
A pillar of stone atop a moss covered mound, the stone is deeply grooved with ogham script.
