In 1949, a jazz club opened in NYC named Birdland after Charlie “Yardbird” Parker to capitalize on his fame. It has hosted many jazz luminaries over the years. With our new print coming to NYCC we are paying homage to that historical place and putting a twist on it. Hello from Borbland!

To keep it short, I'm very much against the use of automation in the slush pile for both of these reasons. As for the Grinder, I'd ideally like to see a flag, rather than a complete delisting, so I can make an informed choice in each case.

As a writer, my first concern is that use of "AI detectors" assumes that all writers submitting a story are guilty until proven innocent. This is not a great basis for forming (working) relationships, which is a vital aspect of our job as a writer.

Exactly! It's unnecessary gatekeeping that proves exactly nothing. And, it doesn't dissuade bad submissions, it merely disadvantages less tech-savvy (or less technologically equipped) writers. And annoys the ones who can do it. Writing & submitting is hard enough without extra hoops to jump through.

Submissions shouldn't require "Special Font 3b" with "1.5 line spacing" & "non-standard margins", preferably on a light green background! (Except for one very specific case that was thoroughly explained in the guidelines). You are NOT Van Halen and you don't need your version of brown M&M's! 🤬

As an avid tracker of my submissions, I really like having all the extra information I can get in addition to Submission Grinder stats. It also helps with planning Sim-subs etc.

You receive a confirmation email with a tracking number, so you can check status. Some publications also tell you the number of your spot in the submission queue, which is nice. I don't think anyone has done your air table approach, which I really liked, btw.
