I've been pushing this in career development for a few years now. Technical skills are changing too quickly to expect instruction on them to last more than 5 years. And to pick up the new technical skills you need to be able to learn and adapt and think critically to take advantage of them.

Ahhh, pick the name with the least amount of name recognition so you can chart your own path without baggage. That would require you to be good at establishing that path and people wanting it.

This was my favorite when he was little. I think I read it every night for two years. I once recited it from memory to him over the phone when I was at a conference. I also love where the wild things are.

Strangely i was just reading about Cousin from a 19th century English writer this week. He seems to be how the Prussian model of teacher education (which was itself adapted from Pestalozzi) came to England. Switzerland - Prussia - France - England.

I kind of love this minimum requirement. The ability to disagree about non factual matters with intent. Its a bar a cat passes, because I did feed the cat but the cat disagrees because it would like more or different food, and it will let everyone know it has never been fed in its life.

They’re all just recycling the Jewish Question against Brown people. Concentration camps. Deportations/Expulsions. Copypaste rhetoric. “They’re here, exactly as we are, but they could never truly be one of us.” They don’t even have the decency to come up with a new name, it’s that plagiarized.

I lost a substantial amount of weight ~two years ago, and the expression changes when in response to "you look great" was "I was incredibly sick for months" are amazing. People think all weight loss is good, and while I've done a lot to keep the weight off, I do not recommend that method of losing.

One of the most harrowing things about academia, when you're a grad student, is how vulnerable you are to how you're perceived by more senior researchers. Your career advancement depends on confidential letters of reference & private discussions amongst faculty. You have no information or control.

Good to see David Eby attending the ceremonies at Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc today. He had strong words of support for residential school survivors.

Sometimes I think about where we would be as a culture today if #MeToo in 2017 had radicalized more straight men into fighting sexual abuse instead of creating a culture of "oh god don't get me CANCELED" and "fake accusations" paranoia and resentment

In the same way that the .com issue was not "are websites useful" or the block chain issue was not "are there places where better security would be useful". Can you provide the product people actually want or that solves a problem for them in a way that has a low bar to access?

The problem is not "are there some tasks that can be automated" it's "can this technology run cheaply enough to make money by providing the service it does well to enough people" and the answer to that right now is no, but there's a big push to make people think that yes is just around the corner.

As I've moved from terminally online, to chronically online, and now to just frequently online I find I'm missing a lot of the short run discourse. I think this might be good for my sanity, only seeing things that stay important for a week or so.

Now that we have proof that AI generated findings are more likely to be research misconduct taken from those who uploaded their findings, perhaps institutions should rethink AI contracts? If it doesn't prohibit use of what you upload to train the model, you're agreeing to the misconduct.

It was a blast for the short time I could be there. My kid loved playing Werewolf, and Taskmaster was hilarious. Definitely the high point for both my wife and I. Sorry I couldn't stay and chat after, but it was great to say hi!

Once again I find myself needing to write that the AI did not ‘go rogue’. It did what it was programmed to do by extremely negligent men, men who are responsible for their actions.

I've managed to avoid the discourse so I don't know the specifics, but it reminds me of something I tell my students. If the interviewer treats you badly at an interview then you probably don't want to work for them, because they will continue treating you poorly.

Anthropic has designed a product that regularly produces automated hacks of other entities, including governments. That’s not “going rogue.” It is either a terrible design problem or what they intended.

Dear Milobar, I'm having a hard time remembering what party you're in any more. It seems to change daily. I have met you many times and you seem a good person, but then you keep doing this stuff, and it's really hard to believe you have any principles when they seem to not matter to you.

Thanks NDP, instead of hearing from you this Fall on why you're cutting 30% of autistic kids off funding or what your plan for PSE is in response to the report you commissioned, I get to hear you campaign against trump and then ether go down in flames or pretend a mandate means never explaining.

Noah Arney @ndarney.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
When they choose the NDP person for my riding I'm going to enjoy grilling them about why the election is happening almost as much as I'm going to grill Millobar for swapping parties every time the wind shifts.

Noah Arney @ndarney.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Imagine what Millobar could do if he stuck to his principles for once instead of jumping ship every time a wave hits. Ug, this is so frustrating to watch as someone in his riding.

Noah Arney @ndarney.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
While I think this is a stupid time to have an election, and it seems dirty to do one while there's no official leader for the opposition, it does seem like Findlay quit to try to stop a snap election, which also screams of playing politics.
