Statement on recent NC candidate's rhetoric regarding political violence #ncpol youtube.com/shorts/1mI3y...
North Carolinians express broad opposition to political violence, according to the October 2025 Catawba-YouGov Survey.
More than 7 in 10 North Carolinians said political violence is never justified to stop a candidate who does not share their political beliefs from being elected.

The Center for North Carolina Politics & Public Service believes that political disagreement is a fundamental part of democratic life—but that disagreement must remain within the bounds of peaceful political participation. Voters, candidates, political organizations, and citizens all have a role in rejecting rhetoric or conduct that encourages violence, harassment, or intimidation.

Recent actions by N.C. political organizations to distance themselves from candidates and condemn political speech that invokes or appears to encourage political violence illustrate the importance of establishing a clear boundary: political disagreement and vigorous political debate are legitimate but political violence is not.

As North Carolina approaches November’s general election, the responsibility for maintaining a peaceful democratic process does not rest solely with election officials. Candidates, political organizations, supporters, and voters all have a role in ensuring peaceful political participation where differences are resolved through discussion, debate, voting, and the institutions of democracy—not through threats, intimidation, or violence.

The strength of American democracy depends not on the absence of political disagreement, but on the ability of all citizens to disagree without fear of violence.
