You can dig deeper into the story of St Manchán's Shrine in the beautifully illustrated publication by Dr Griffin Murray and metalsmith and photographer Kevin O’Dwyer.

The shrine is Ireland’s largest surviving reliquary. It is a fusion of Irish, Scandinavian Urnes, and Romanesque art styles. The shrine is thought to date to the 12th century, possibly commissioned by the King of Connacht, Toirrdelbach Ua Conchobair, as it was enhanced by his son Ruaidrí.

Today is the feast day of St Manchán. Manchán was an important figure in early medieval Ireland. He is thought to have been born somewhere in the north-east of Ulster in the early 7th century. He went on to found a monastery at Lemanaghan. His relics were housed in this spectacular shrine.
St Manchan's Shrine. A triangular or wedge shaped box carved of yew wood, with ornate metal fixings of a cross and a number of small figures.

DILL_B1.BMF
A color portrait of media mogul Barry Diller, whose net worth is estimated to be $4 billion or so. Diller got his start in the mailroom of the William Morris Agency and slowly worked his way up through the entertainment business, eventually becoming one of the most powerful men in the industry. Years before that though, when Diller was Vice President of Development at ABC in the late 1960s, he took a meeting with a mysterious man who somehow got past Diller’s secretary. The man was tall and thin and smelled faintly of moss and woodland soil. The man pitched an ABC Movie of the Week idea to Diller, about a fairy invasion of the modern world. Imagine, the man said with an enchanting accent, the casting. Milton Berle, Carol Lynley, Jessica Walter, Ralph Bellamy. Werner Klemperer, Lesley Ann Warren. The greats. Diller loved the idea but the special effects budget was a dealbreaker. Never fear, the strange man told Diller in a lilting voice. One day the movie will happen and there will be no need for special effects. No need.

This sandstone pillar at Gallen in County Offaly is decorated with an interlaced cross, set above two beasts that face each other, each with an flamboyantly interlaced tail. The lower panel of diagonal fretwork is more weathered, with another four legged animal – possibly a stag – at the centre.

CORSICA.BMF
A blue Chevy Corsica, a ubiquitous sedan in the early 1990s but now largely forgotten. If you ever rented a car between the years 1987 and 1995, chances are it was a Corsica. Samantha rented a Corsica, only once, at PDX. She drove the four hours to Gold Hill to see at long last the Oregon Vortex. For most people the Oregon Vortex was a cheesy roadside attraction, a place where balls roll uphill and you know it’s contrived but you’re delighted in the wonders of the illusion. For Samantha, though, the Oregon Vortex was a pilgrimage. It was proof. Proof that what she witnessed in the woods when she ran away from home those many years ago was real. How when she lay in the forest on a bed of moss, the ferns surrounding her like pinnated green curtains, she took off her ring and dropped it, and the ring fell up.

PHONEPAD.BMF
A memo pad with the heading “Business Phone Systems” at the top and an illustration of a businesswoman talking on the phone, pen in hand. Standing over her desk, dressed in a maroon pantsuit and answering the phone, Samantha remembers a term from Art History 101, mise en abyme. It’s when a copy of an original is placed inside the original itself. Except Samantha isn’t taking notes during the phone call like the good employee pictured on the pad. She’s doodling, drawing vaguely phallic-shaped telephones and putting smiley faces on them. This temp job at Business Phone Systems, LLC sucks, and Samantha is just about done. When she decides to walk away from the job, tonight in fact, she’ll break into the storage closet first and steal a box full of these pads, at least a hundred or so. Fair compensation, Samantha thinks, for making her dredge up memories of Professor Waller.
