good to see new rail cars, but the real problem with via is that the feds privatized the rails and now train passengers can’t get anywhere on time. what are they going to do about that?

If we had the political will, just think of what we could accomplish in North America. We could have trains snaking the continent. It could be the easiest, most efficient, most affordable option providing good unionized jobs in manufacturing, maintenance & service, while reducing emissions.

High speed rail in Canada is a good investment. It’s the kind of ambitious nation-building that actually makes Canada more resilient etc. No surprise, far-right Pierre Poilievre says he’d cancel it, saying it will go over budget. Spoiler—it will. Just like EVERY car highway does. But he likes those.

What our elected leaders don’t seem to understand is that public transportation IS sovereignty!! Public housing is sovereignty Affordable essentials is sovereignty When we have our needs met we are more resilient & less vulnerable to extremism.

The future of transportation is electric rail. Whether our elected officials begin the infrastructure building process a hundred years ago or in the future, the math doesn’t change. Electric rail is the most economical & efficient way to transport people long distance from one place to another.

Hey, remember when car and oil companies successfully lobbied governments to create car dependent cities and suburbs, and once we became almost completely car dependent, WE became the loudest, angriest champions of unhindered road space for cars, unnaturally cheap gas, and subsidized free parking?
Cartoon of road jammed with cars between single detached homes in suburban, car-dependent sprawl.

At some point in the near future, the Saint John Mystery Guild is going to tackle the 'Electric Trolley Cover-Up' of Saint John as well, which I believe to be related to some of the tunnels we're investigating.
But here is a teaser post...
Yet another major piece of infrastructure and Saint John history built by our ancestors and sold off to private industry, only to be destroyed. Why did/do the officials of Saint John destroy (or allow to be destroyed) and cover up much of its 'real' history?
Any information you have on the Trolley's of Saint John, please share it here!”Saint John mystery guild logo, shaped like a circular woven badge featuring a question mark with wings in the centre Screenshot of cbc news article with a photograph of rusty trolley tracks unearthed in Saint John : =

"Rail Cruise" is actually the perfect way of thinking about how VIA Rail works in Atlantic Canada. I can only use the train to make inter-city trips because I have a fairly high level of autonomy at my job (the train being 6 hours late doesn't matter). Even then it routinely hits my sanity cap.

Canadian government expected to announce plans for Toronto–Montréal–Québec City high-speed rail tomorrow: www.thestar.com/politics/fed... A very promising project that compares well with high-speed lines in Europe in terms of distance between major cities: www.urban.org/research/pub...
High-speed rail could link Toronto and Montréal in 2h30.The distance between Toronto and Montréal is similar to that between Milan and Naples, or Paris and Marseille, two very popular high-speed rail routes.
