Tbh there is some sense of the US *surrendering* the politics way in excess of what its failure to achieve its military objectives should warrant. The upfront sanctions waiver for Iranian oil exports without getting anything in return is pretty insane

Kublai Khan told me that barbarians keep eating his invasion fleets so I asked how many fleets he has and he says he just builds a new invasion fleet afterward so I said it sounds like he's just feeding invasion fleets to barbarians and then his Branch Secretary started crying

You can go to a random place in Iran and find masses of people complaining that the government is taking too long to deport Afghans, you can go to Ghana and find people worrying about great replacement through Nigerians. "Whiteness" is a deeply unhelpful analytical framework for this

Iranian big men, strong men, crying, saying, "Mr President please, please stop bombing us from your beautiful White House Ballroom that's under budget and ahead of schedule even though it should have been built in 2020 if it weren't for crooked Hillary stealing the election for Joe Biden."

As far as I'm aware Pabst himself is the only immediate source for the claim that Noske personally gave them the go-ahead for the killing, the rest is supposition

The problem with this argument is that it defines liberalism as classical liberalism and leaves socialism as something entirely vague. The concept of welfare spending is not something socialism can claim as its antithesis to capitalism.

That's not even getting into how virtually every left-wing party in Europe doubles as the prime personnel reserve of Russian fifth columnists/useful idiots

Unsurprisingly writing about the need for a liberal-socialist rapprochement is mainly a pastime for American progressives, which I chalk up to the two-party system and terminological confusion that has resulted in most self-described socialists over there really just being left-liberals

Vaguely gesturing at the history of ideas and shared philosophical roots is also a poor substitute for practical politics. Actually existing socialist parties are fundamentally hostile to markets as such, not just "doctrinaire free marketeerism".

Funny, though unsurprising, that Trump's issue isn't Iran running a protection racket but that he's being excluded from the racket. The ceasefire is easier to understand if you conceptualise the process not as geopolitical competition but as a shakedown attempt between feuding crime syndicates

Overall Trump's statements during this war should be more treated like Medvedev's vodka-fuelled ramblings about nuking the UK: certainly indicative of the man's character and priorities but not necessarily actual operational planning

Should note that desalination plants are only a minor part of Iran's water supply and mainly matter for some small coastal communities and the Gulf islands. Meanwhile the UAE gets almost half of its water from desalination, Qatar and Bahrain even more than that

And if the IR persists it would be just one more of the structural problems that aren't getting solved, probably not even in the top 5 at that

Navid @navidi.bsky.social · 29/03/2026
It's not a reset but it's not about breaking points either. Resources that could be spend on expanding productive capital will have to be spent on repairing it. But if Iran is reintegrated into global markets it would still be better off vs. the counterfactual of continued isolation under the IR

Navid @navidi.bsky.social · 29/03/2026
So far arms industries and their immediate suppliers with the recent strikes on steel plants being the first major expansion of targeting that affects sites significant to the wider economy.
110
Navid @navidi.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
But none of this "breaks" the economy, it just requires increased capital expenditures in one sector. A government that could achieve reintegration into global markets would a net economic benefit even considering any war damages and if the IR stays it has much bigger problems anyways

Navid @navidi.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
What does "function at as an industrial model" even mean? Material damage can be recuperated relatively easily depending on the circumstances. To the degree it's going to excerbate existing problems that's just a function of the regime's "economic model" already failing

You'd think people would have learned by how hard they got rug pulled by the negotiations charade in February to not fall for it again. The war is going to last for at least a few weeks more and Trump will seize Kharg island by the end of this week, mark my words

I'll also note that Israeli policy discussions of this war seem much more sanguine, possibly because its government's messaging was more clearly "we'll punch the IR in the face so hard they won't be able to stand up straight again"

1. Reporting at its onset indicated the campaign was planned as a 4-8 week operation, we're on week 3 2. Militarily it seems designed to irrecoverably cripple the regime's military capabilities and open up the possibility of regime change at its conclusion (not during!). So far it's proceeding apace

Navid @navidi.bsky.social · 23/03/2026
There's a general problem with commenters appropriating the admin's confused messaging as their own evaluative lens for the campaign. This is compounded by current reporting being filled with suppositions and questionable sourcing. These people claimed the US might run out of munitions in 4 days!

Navid @navidi.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
A lot of the bad takes rn are overcorrections from the GWOT. Guerrillas can go underground and focus on the occasional raid, which renders individuals somewhat replaceable. The Iranian regime has a nation to run; there are laws to enforce, payrolls to disburse, and planning meetings to attend

Reformism has no sway at this point. Armed resistance movements are limited Kurdish and Baloch guerillas, which are divisive in Iranian society at large. The main current of popular opposition is monarchist now, like it or not. The non-monarchists opposition lacks a unifying figure with mass appeal

The system of the Islamic Republic in its entirety, it's not that conceptually complicated. One might question the viability of such a goal but the fundamental scope of the grievance should be abundantly clear at this point

There is a lot of evidence accumulated since 2023 if not earlier indicating that the Iranian leadership is capable of some quite profound miscalculations in relation to the US and Israel. Just because the US is led by a delusional sociopath does not mean its opponents are always master strategists.

The discussions of regime stability keep focusing on the wrong questions, nobody serious actually expected quick political disintegration! The relevant point of analysis is how this will leave the regime's ability to deal with mass unrest and security deterioration in the coming weeks and months

It's almost funny how some treat this war as some kind of reset to the myriad of social, economic, and political crises Iran was already facing before it began rather than a massive amplifier
