This is all so true and especially true for kids' lit authors. You must hope that the publisher, librarians, teachers, parents, and retailers support the books and eventually get them into the hands of your readers.

I used the fountain pen to ink this illustration then painted over the subtle pink ink with watercolor. If you're curious, I share the whole process over on my Youtube channel- the video is live now!

Blackberries are so dang cute, I would argue they're cuter than strawberries. I have been painting a lot of berries this year, and this illustration was a fieldtest to put @kakimori_japan 's Frost #fountainpen and their Tototo pigment ink through their paces.

This week, I inked up a Kakimori Frost #fountainpen with their Tototo pigment ink, inked up this illustration, painted it with watercolor, and shared my thoughts youtube.com/watch?v=cFQv...

A clean bill of health for both boys and they're together burrowing in the big travel cage

I feel so bad for Chicory- File is traveling in luxury and Chicory is roughing it. They both took the 30 min car ride so well

130

Becca Hillburn @nattosoup.bsky.social · 14/10/2026

Ok, so we actually have many travel cages bc Chicory is kinda wiley. File put himself up in the bigger cage to eat grapes and corn, but Chicory kept escaping the other big travel cage. We had to kinda bully him into this tiny travel cage last minute. We brought the other big travel cage JIC.

FINALLY got the two boys in travel cages to go to the vet, don't ask about the accommodation discrepancy I'll explain later

It's been extremely frustrating and has probably cost us money, but my spouse was dogged about it and finally got them to fix it.

They kept delisting the book I printed thru another printer, but kept my KDP books listed. We've given them proof that we have the inventory and proof that we are who we say we are multiple times.

After fighting with Amazon for TEN MONTHS, the second book in my comic series, 7" Kara, is finally available thru Amazon again (it was _always_ available thru my shop tho)

The little girl in the illustration is Kara, the main character from my comic series and your guide to Louisiana foods and festivals.

Big Shot is a New Orleans soda, and the only other flavor I've tried is their pineapple, which is synonymous with brown bag lunches to me. I'm glad to see this brand is still around- I can't drink it anymore (too sweet) but my mom picked up a Red Creme so I'd have real world reference to paint.

Becca Hillburn @nattosoup.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

Another one for the Louisiana Food series- I grew up drinking Big Shot red creme soda that my Dad bought me from the local Shell when he went to get cigs. I think I lived on this and banana Laffy taffy and Coke Icees from Timesaver as a child.

Becca Hillburn @nattosoup.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

It's a local thing that I drank growing up but can't do now because they are way too sweet

I shared another watercolor review today! This illo is the fieldtest for Maries Chinese watercolor pans, featuring a vibrant teal blue dragonfly. I love Gansai-style watercolors- the vibrant colors, the opacity, the larger pans and I used to love exploring AliExpress for Chinese watercolor brands.

A Horus-themed traditional piece I'm currently working on. :> I'm so happy with how it looks so far! Watercolors, colored pencils, and acrylic paint on Arches hot-pressed watercolor paper. #art #traditionalart #egyptiangods #workinprogress

Photo of a work in progress, mixed-media piece featuring the Egyptian God, Horus. The left side of the piece mainly features yellow, orange, red, and pink colors. The right side has blue, green, and purple hues. There are ornamental, mandala-like patterns throughout the piece.
The majority of the piece was created with Caran d'Ache Luminance colored pencils, the base colors were first added with watercolors, and some of the details, like the background patterns, were added with acrylic paint.

Is the portfolio passe for traditional illustration work? I'm currently revamping mine & have been doing a little research. It seems like many working artists (not all, just those I've looked at) either skip the portfolio for Instagram or use their portfolio as a shop or are just selling classes

Two layers of wet on wet, with a bokeh lift out for each layer to build up the effect! The first was a layer of dk green, ultramarine blue, a granulating brown, and yellow ochre, the second was a layer of this green sennelier makes that granulates out to ultramarine blue
