When tested head-to-head, a majority of voters chose a vision focused on fully funding community needs like quality schools, jobs, affordable housing, and mental health/addiction treatment, over a traditional "tough-on-crime" platform focused on expanded policing.

This September marks the 69th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. While the Civil Rights Act of 1957 itself was narrow and its enforcement mechanisms weak, its symbolism opened the door for the foundational reforms of 1960, 1964, 1965, and 1968.

MYTH: Some people need to go to jail to get treatment REALITY: Most people in local jails have substance use disorders, yet only a tiny fraction of jails provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder. Jails are designed for punishment, not care.

Sandra Bland's death tells us all we need to know about pretrial detention: it's death-making. Sandra's bail was set at $5,000 following her arrest in Texas on July 10, 2015, after a traffic stop. She was able to make a call from jail after seeing a judge, confirming that her bail had been set.

It costs about $70,000 each year to imprison one person in the United States. For women, who are the fastest-growing incarcerated population in the country, that cost is 25 to 75 percent higher, according to a new report shared with The 19th. bit.ly/4oKpuBy

The United States has often imagined democracy through the language of individualism. Black mutual aid traditions offer a different vision for democracy, one that recognizes that people cannot meaningfully participate in democracy when abandoned by the systems around them. The lack of affordable housing, nutritious food, healthcare, childcare, and education is not separate from democracy; it determines who has access to it.

National Bail Out @nationalbailout.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
As the U.S. marks 250 years, Black mutual aid traditions remind us that democracy has never depended solely on the State's promises.  It has depended on the capacity of everyday people to care for one another, to organize collectively, and to build networks of survival when institutions fail.
