Guest speaker at St Helen and St Katharine this week - joining students from secondary schools I created a workshop/game based on a hypothetical council with £1B to spend, but with difficult budget decisions to make... Big thanks to all, and all power to the OX14 Learning Partnership 💪

Oxfordshire’s first new Quiet Lane has come into effect. Shepherds Pit Lane, to the village of Stanton St John, now has a closed gate at one end to prevent through motor traffic, making the road safer for walkers and cyclists. The parallel Bayswater Road remains open to cars and is no slower.

cllrdrnathanley.substack.com/p/the-roofs-... excellent article here from a councillor in Abingdon. He's so right that we need more solar everyone, roofs won't solve the problem alone.

The roofs won’t be enough
“Just put them on roofs instead” is the most comfortable argument in British politics. It is also the one that quietly hands the bill to our children.

Hear, hear! Excellent piece. The roofs first objection to urgently needed solar farms "does not survive contact with a calculator". It also doesn't survive our duty to our children.

Those people (note I'm not saying all the villagers) are making themselves look silly, and merely outing their political allegiance and making others less sympathetic to their cause. They already voted right wing. Who can they threaten not to vote for?

I’m sorry, but I’m going to put my neck on the line & say this is entirely the wrong policy position. We need to be incentivising people to use less fuel - 17.28bn litres of fuel per year currently. Imagine what £1.7bn per year could do to active & public transport. Not discount dinosaur juice

To celebrate the reopening of Botley Road, Bill Gates and George Soros are there in person scanning the 5G chips inserted with the COVID vaccine of the people walking through the checkpoint between the 15 minute neighbourhoods (Resisted the urge to make this comment on @nathanley.com 's FB post)

💧 Last month I wrote a blog asking you to consider that flooding might be a bit more complicated than “blocked drains” and a lazy council. I also promised to come back with something practical. So here it is. Less polemical, more practical. 👇 cllrdrnathanley.substack.com/p/what-you-c...

I do often wonder whether the best use of someone's time is to slag off their own street or area (usually driven by wrong/bollocks nostalgia) so forcefully on the internet. This stuff is being noted by others

I swear that group is just pure rage bait. Full of people blaming the woke local council for closing an old (and superseded by new infra) track and thereby causing all the congestion!!!1

What's frustrating as a Cllr with a large following is that it's by far the most efficient platform for reaching the people who vote. BUT, also lots of people tell me the only reason they are on there is to follow me, which hooks them onto other stuff. I need to transition people away

You underestimate the effect of their socials (one in particular) relentlessly being full of a certain group of people reinforcing - day after day - that 'Turkish Barbers' are the root cause of ALL the problems on the high street. Lots of MPs have given in to it

Honestly, I'm starting to wonder how *any* other party will be able to compete with this level of corruption, and such loose finance regulation That postal vote letter Farage sends us every year full of lies? Expect more of that Against the 'elites', fighting for the little guy? Yeah, right

Dismayed by defeat of the assisted dying bill. Nothing was won today – no new palliative care funding, no new disability support. And the suffering that brought this bill to parliament remains.

Agreed 100%. I tend to find that people negative about this really don't *rate* their own areas like they should. Like there is a fear that just a couple of quid will mean a marginal decision, means they'll now go to Kettering instead of Oxford

The Greater Oxford proposal was also based on fudged data, and would not deliver councils of viable scale. As POETS identified in the same doc, instead of using ONS growth rates of 0.5%, Oxford City inflated the rates to 2.9%, to grow tiny Greater Oxford from 240k population to 345k by 2040

'Baroness' in the House of Lords for 20 years sure sounds like a politician's title itself. I wonder if she's ever done anything constructive on issues related to this in that time?

I also think that purity testing to the nth degree (not applying that here necessarily) is part of the reason this site hasn't taken off like we'd have hoped by now. It has helped explain a tough topic to a median voter audience (fb), and probably saved a lot of winter casework hassle

I guess there is the environmental aspect which I know is important, and I respect the suggestions But I also standby that the writing itself (which took a while) has now been viewed thousands of times on a more sceptical platform than this, and I regret nothing in this instance
