Still struggling to find the words to describe yesterday's assisted dying result. It's a mix of devastation and disillusionment. I'm still in shock. I'm thinking of the people I've met over the past five years who are terminally ill and unbearably suffering AND have campaigned with me

As a campaigner living with terminal illness put it: for politicians there may be another vote, but for people like her, there is no time. Heartbreaking that she endured false hope, only for progress to be stalled by undemocratic manoeuvres in the Lords, and now this.

Lauren Edwards, who’s bringing back the assisted dying bill, has responded to Andy Burnham’s comments. She argues improving social and palliative care can go hand in hand with assisted dying as per some other nations. She also notes a 4 year implementation period for the bill.

Let's be absolutely clear: there is no amount of new drilling in the North Sea that Burnham could approve which would be consistent with our climate goals. If we are to avoid complete climate breakdown, we need to turn all effort to clean renewable energy - not doubling down on dirty fossil fuels.
