Was thinking something similar… always so hard to remember how many Zacahrias go into a Scaramucci, a lettucewilt, etc. I end up asking Siri every time, just like teaspoons and tablespoons into cups.

Rick lays out the many ways this suit is problematic, rightly concluding this is a political document and likely to go nowhere. If this *does* go nowhere, expect that some in the anti-democracy mvmt will use that as pretext to argue feds must directly intervene in California's election.

Agreed. So, if one were to want to criminalize the acts of AI agents (or their human/corporate principals) in submitting false reports, then how might one revise this part of the statute... 🤖 🤔

It's unclear here if the false report by @anthropic.com implicated anyone in particular, but FWIW it's a 2d deg misdemeanor to "knowingly give[] false information to any law enforcement officer with intent to implicate another."

Philly PD says @anthropic.com submitted false info to its homicide tip line. In PA it's a 3d deg misdemeanor for a person to "pretend[] to furnish... authorities with information relating to an offense or incident when he knows he has no information relating to such offense or incident." Discuss.

A thoughtful take on what also struck me as a thoughtful conversation. Even if one is doubtful of motives of some ai doomers, if doom/very bad outcomes seem plausible to credible insiders with view of what’s being developed, then seems reasonable to take that risk seriously.

Wrote my undergrad thesis on the politics of language standardization in Mali's Dogon region. The idea of having a state institute of applied linguistics seemed, to this naïve midwestern kid, pretty foreign. But: perhaps the Official Words Power is just a prerogative of our Unitary Executive? 🤔

We are hosting our third Peopling Politics mini-conference this spring in Philadelphia - March 4-7. Abstracts are due October 15th; let me know if you have questions. See peoplingpolitics.com for more on our network & what we're aiming to do. Apply at essnet.org.
Flyer for Peopling Politics mini-conference at ESS 2027 - on a blue background with the US Capitol in the background. Can't fit all the text here, see peoplingpolitics.com or email dlauris1@swarthmore.edu for more information. Apply at essnet.org, then select our mini-conference.

This mini-conference will bring together sociologists, political scientists, other academics, and political practitioners who study and/or work in U.S. politics with a focus on race, class, inequality, and the influence of social and cultural forces. We believe that in order to understand and affect political institutions or electoral outcomes, we must begin with the contexts and cultures of the people who make political phenomena real - from non-voters and voters to grassroots organizers to elected officials and their staff. This requires empirical observations of actual people and their actions, rather than relying on abstracted models of how individuals, political groups, or institutions operate.
