When @kategage.bsky.social gave me a copy of the beautiful 831 Stories book, I devoured it in one sitting. The author nailed the arguments and made them wayyyyy more fun to read than I could’ve imagined. And I delighted in seeing so much of our work at @economicsecurityproject.org in the pages

11/ If culture moves policy, then funding culture is how we change things. That means resourcing creators directly through programs like the Economic Futures creator cohort and by putting more cash into people’s pockets so they have the freedom to tell their own stories.
110
Natalie Foster @nataliefoster.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
10/ Kamau put it this way: "The more people have free time and aren't freaked out about their bills, the more beauty we can create in the world.” That’s what cash unlocks. It helps people pay the bills, but also gives them the freedom to create, tell stories, and build culture.
110
Natalie Foster @nataliefoster.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
9/ But a creator cohort can only fund so many people. The bigger version, the one that resources every potential storyteller, is the case we are making for a guaranteed income.
100
Natalie Foster @nataliefoster.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
8/ I shared with Kamau how, after one of our sessions with an antitrust scholar, a creator in our cohort came up with a great line we still use to this day: “You can’t budget your way out of a monopoly.” One sentence and a whole economic argument starts to click into place.
200
Natalie Foster @nataliefoster.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
7/ The Economic Futures creator cohort is @economicsecurityproject.org 's attempt to tell the real story of our economy. We connect creators with policy experts so they can translate economic ideas, such as monopolies or guaranteed income, into stories that speak to more people.

Natalie Foster @nataliefoster.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
6/ That video moved people. So much of the early coverage from Minneapolis focused on the fear, but Ammar’s story was proof that, despite the fear, neighbors were stepping up to take care of one another. Without Kamau’s camera, that story never gets told.

Natalie Foster @nataliefoster.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
5/ No network. No 20-person crew. Just a phone, a small team, and a willingness to go. He was able to talk to and film a Palestinian bodega owner named Ammar, who was delivering groceries for free to neighbors afraid to leave their homes because of the ICE raids.

Natalie Foster @nataliefoster.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
4/ He also talked about his own recent trip to Minneapolis earlier this year. He wanted to be on the ground reporting on community resistance to ICE, and within a week, the McKnight Foundation made it happen.

3/ "He gave the example of @anniemleonard.bsky.social 's Story of Stuff. On paper, a 20-minute animated video about global consumerism and waste isn’t exactly clickbait. But the Tides Foundation backed it anyway, trusted Annie to make it her way, and it garnered over 50M views worldwide.

2/ Quoting the artist Favianna Rodriguez, he said: "Culture predicts political change." He added the part most of us need to hear: "You have to make sure the culture can exist for the political change to happen — and you have to be able to amplify it so that everybody sees it.

1/ Policy is downstream of culture. That's something I've believed for a long time — and sitting down with comedian, director, and Emmy and Peabody winner @wkamaubell.bsky.social at Guaranteed Income Now in Austin, TX last week, he gave me a sharper way to say it:
