I’ve never been able to get it diagnosed, but the best guess to the rashes I often got in childhood is a sun allergy. It doesn’t happen much anymore, just a random small spot on my left hand or arm, and even that hasn’t happened in several years.

8th Columbo: Mandy Patinkin
9th Columbo: Eugene Levy

Who knew that cleaning your stand fan for the first time in probably a year would result in strong, steady indoor breezes? (Will the lesson stick with me *this* time, after at least 20 years of having stand fans by my bed? Signs, uh, point to no.)

There are a ton of Agatha Christie things on sale today (only?) for Kindle/Kobo, and I’ve only read two before and have often thought maybe I should read more, but I don’t know where to start. Can we call this the @starinthetitle.bsky.social and @clairewillett.bsky.social signal for recs?

I think I’ve just come up with a nice New Year’s Eve tradition for myself: rereading @keaneofficial.bsky.social ‘s Hopes and Fears book while listening to the music. I did it last New Year’s Eve, and I did it today. A straightforward way for me to end the year on a good note.

Well, I've finally done it. I put together my version of a library display classic -- the covers are all in a single color. In my case, green. As in, "These books are evergreen." I like the display more than I thought I would. (Not that anyone will check any of it out; they never do. But still.)

I heard someone say this, and I like the metaphor: Using AI to write a school paper is like bringing a forklift to the gym. The point is not that the weights need to be moved around.

This @keaneofficial.bsky.social thread is important, so I'm also reposting it with alt text.
Our relationship with War Child goes back nearly twenty years now. We've always been in awe of them.

They've changed so many lives and repaired so much damage in the world.

But the work they're doing in Gaza at the moment is on a different level.

We've felt just as helpless as everyone else watching what's going on there and so we asked War Child if they could give us a picture of what's happening on the ground - from their direct experience rather than through the lens of the media.

It's important to understand that War Child have staff working in the field who are themselves Palestinian.

They told us of the exhaustion of just trying to survive and find food.

It's amazing how much War Child are still able to do given the situation.During our phone call they explained how important it is to also think about the long term impact and how much work will need to be done in the future.

For us, the bottom line is that whatever your political standpoint, race, religion - people all have the same basic needs.

That is the very core of what humanity is the common needs that we share as a species.

We've travelled all over the world with our music and if there's one thing we know it's that you find the same focus on family and community

EVERYWHERE.

Whatever our preconceived idea of a place is it's always wrong.

We've experienced it over and over again. It's humbling, enlightening, heart-warming. We're sure others must experience the same thing. But to put it simply - we have a duty to each other, globally. So together with War Child we have put together a series of posts that we hope will help in some small way to build more understanding about what is happening and what we can all do about it.

If they resonate with you then we encourage you to share them.

The more noise we make, the more pressure we put on our governments to act.

Love, TTRJ

When people talk about joy and positive art as something shallow, I always think back to this quote from Ursula Le Guin:
The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist: a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain.

While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI: At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.
AI impoverishes us at every step of the process:
- data centers pollute our environment
- energy use drives up costs
- content theft robs creators of income
- the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages
- using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence
- the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape

All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people

And this is a real thing! Of all the things reading can be, first it has to be pleasurable, and entertaining, and engaging, otherwise people will do something else with their time. And pleasure reading begets more reading, or at least, more than the reading that feels like dutiful homework.

Many people that say things along the lines of "Libraries should do this thing" have never investigated to see if Libraries are in fact already doing that thing or if it is in fact possible for Libraries to do it! Libraries already do a lot of things in between doing the other things that they do!

I’d also note that Amazon links are very junky. We use Amazon for supplies at work and people will share links that are four or five lines long in an email. Just know that you can get rid of everything after the B0 number (ASIN) section of an Amazon product link you copy from your address bar.

Good (sorta old, sorta new) news of the day: my vocal cord paralysis is definitely (officially verified by the doctor) gone! I think it was definitely gone at least by the day after Father’s Day, but I know it’s not just, like, super-compensating or something but is instead moving like it should.

You guys, in trying to write a silly response to someone, I may have inadvertently written a halfway decent short bio?
A screenschot from Discord where anancymouse (that's me) writes, "Bryan, I am but a humble librarian, an information professional. [The community's Nerd Bunny emote appears here, which is a small cartoon beige bunny wearing a white dress shirt, black vest, red bow tie, and thick, round, black glasses. The bunny is smiling with its two front, buck teeth. By using this emote, I am calling myself a nerd before anyone else does.]
It’s hard to resist the clarion call of someone searching for just the right resource."

Rereading that, boy, was I right to call my nerd self out.

I've found that I need a straw to (mostly) drink reliably these days, so I thought it would be good to have my own travel straws, just in case. Finding longer ones for single-serve bottles proved challenging. But finding this particular set, well, let's just say it makes things easy.
A package of two tins (the top one a sort of sea blue, the bottom one a pale grey) holding reusable silicone straws. The packing and the tins have a lot of text on them -- kind of, like, *too* many words -- but the important part is the color name on the two tins. The blue tin calls its color "Sea," and the grey tin says "Fog."
