Can we afford the future? Cameron Neylon & I built an analytics pipeline projecting consortium costs under different scenarios. Using data from #CAUL/#Bibsam we show publicly available metadata can be used to build publishing profiles and project publishing services costs. doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
Stacked bar chart showing overlap of detection of affiliated publications for CAUL institutions from 2015 to 2024. A substantial proportion of outputs are identified as affiliated in both OpenAlex and OpenAIRE with both contributing a proportion of unique outputs.
Stacked area graph showing a projection of publishing systems costs over time. Overall costs rise from around 80 million to about 160 million euros from 2024 to 2032. The model scenario, built up from past data for Bibsam, focuses on expansion of publishing agreements to reduce APC payments so shows an increasing proportion of agreement costs over time.

Open Access Licences and Open Metadata in Transformative Agreements – Scholarly Communication Analytics
I analyse Crossref metadata for around 250,000 journal articles published between 2019 and 2025. The analysis reveals that contractual language alone is insufficient to ensure implementation: coverage of specific metadata elements varied considerably across publishers and agreements, and explicit provisions do not consistently translate into higher coverage. A notable near-absence of ROR ID coverage across most agreements highlights gaps that undermine institutional attribution in research assessment and bibliometric analyses, while CC BY licence adoption is highest where agreements mandate it as the sole permissible licence.
