Martial Club's Halloween Special, NIGHTMARE IN LITTLE SAIGON, is a lot of fun. Maybe not as tight as their Jiang Shi film from 5 years ago, but it's still a riot. Go check it out on YouTube: youtu.be/mbBl10vFnKM?...

If I had a nickel for every time I showed up on a podcast to talk about how incredibly badass and leftist Kamen Rider Black Sun is, I'd have two nickels... which isn't a lot, but it's awesome I got to do it twice. SPOILER-FILLED episode here. Follow Final Forum and go watch the show already!!! 🔥

All of football, all over the world has been completely distorted by Man City illegally dumping billions into their business. Every transfer price, every salary, today is a direct result of their financial manipulation. their entire brand was built on this brazen cheating. and they're unapologetic

Not a fan of Barney Ronay's writing style but this paragraph absolutely nails the problem with the Premier League.

It is also important to remember that English football hovers like a locust
cloud over every other league. The reeling-in of talent and expertise is
hugely destabilising. How are you supposed to feel in Germany or Belgium
about the fact City and Chelsea have between them spent more than £3bn on
transfer fees, all of which is now tainted, apparently put into circulation by
something other than a legitimate sporting project?

Arsene Wenger called it in 2005, 21 years ago.

"I feel yes, because they are a financially doped club.

"They have enhancement of performances through financial resources which are
unlimited. For me, it's a kind of doping because it's not in any way linked to their
resources.

"It puts pressure on the market that is not very healthy. They can go to Steven Gerrard or
Rio Ferdinand and say 'how much do you earn, we'll give you twice as much'."

This. Is. Where. The. Learning. Happens. This is where they are being encouraged to actively engage material, question and probe what they know, and hopefully achieve a deeper understanding that they will carry beyond my class.

I post practice exams so students can test their knowledge and understanding. So they can practice the types of questions they’ll get. So they’ll go back and revisit stuff they got wrong on the exam with their notes.

If the goal is about reinforcing and checking student learning and understanding, then that goal is undermined when students are unprepared for the question formats, when they don’t know what’s important, or how to prepare themselves.

The point of exams should not be “gotchas” designed to trick students. They should not be a “weed out” mechanism designed to force failure of some students. They can instead be a tool for learning - a “hey, learn this because it’s so important I’m going to check” roadmap for the course content.

The best way to see HOPE (호프, 2026) is in theaters - the less I say, the better. Sure I have gripes but the pros overwhelmingly outweigh the cons. Wife & I had a dynamite time last nite so ignore the haters and enjoy!

I was not expecting 1986's YAKUZA WIVES (極道の妻たち) to be THIS GOOD. Full of aura and pain, the movie puts the wives & mistresses of the yakuza on full display as Japan's working class is slowly eviscerated by the dark underbelly of Japan's bubble economy. No wonder this was a hit in Japan!

The issue to me with Minus One’s ballyhooed anti-war stance is that, like, 80%+ of the criticism is leveled at the way the war was carried out (no regard for the human value of the *Japanese* soldier) instead of reckoning with war generally or the empire’s actions.

Naika Video @naikavideo.bsky.social · 08/09/2026

I ain't one for sitting down and telling you that 1989's ROAD HOUSE is an arthouse masterpiece....far from it actually - it's hardboiled, American cheese that's burned onto the griddle and served with a side of stale fries...and I LOVE IT. It KNOWS what it is, and it commits.

This is why Andor (the series) was so powerful and well received. It's about the reality of living in that system, how to fight back, and the costs that you incur when you do. It's much more powerful and meaningful than Rise of Skywalker which is just rehashed fears from the 1950s.

I would also point out that Star Wars falls under this same problem; it was born from a very rational Boomer fear of a techno-facist state crushing people's freedom. But the problem is that the techno-facist state is here. Warning about its impending takover is no longer an interesting message.

The fears of the boomer generation (corporations would take over) have come true. So, Scott pivoted to a neurotic obsession with the asinine panspermia theory. Which is where this franchise is now. Very few people who aren't 70+ years old thinks panspermia is a neat idea to explore.

For me, James Lew was the face of Asian America for martial arts action. Despite being a jobber, henchman, or villain most of the time, he really stood out as a hero or an ally, and I find it sad that one of the few times he was an MC was in his directorial debut. RIP man.

Saw 1970's INVISIBLE SWORDSMAN (透明剣士) last nite and for a tokusatsu period film, it's pretty neat! From the same filmmaker responsible for some of the Yokai Monster films, it weaves childlike wonder with some neat practical effects. Not a bad way to spend an evening. And yes, there's yokai too!

Finally read Professor Kapur's publication "The Invention of the Kamikaze: Dissent and Resistance in the Japanese Military" for a 'certain video essay' & it was eye-opening, making me wonder when certain tokusatsu films will dive deeper into these themes w/o the nostalgia...

One of my favorite action sequences from Etsuko Shihomi in SISTER STREET FIGHTER: FIFTH LEVEL FIST (1976). I can whine about the demise of Super Sentai & Power Rangers but in the end, martial arts action films will always be above the both of them for me.

With the news that the Disney+ adaptation of POWER RANGERS is NOT moving forward, this thread is especially salient. How many times have I've grown up as an older millennial hearing about how "a Japanese IP needs to be adapted to American sensibilities" back in the late 80s and 90s?

They don't want a gateway to new experiences, they want to be lovingly swaddled in their memories of the prelapsarian 1990s. Power Rangers fans are not Toku fans who just need a little boost; they are single-target nostalgia hounds begging to have their fixations vindicated in the culture.
