When the right complains about 'over-diagnosis' they really mean people aren't suffering at all & so don't warrent support. For the left that's disengenious, as people's suffering is real, but rather points to psycho-social problems that over-medicalisation mistreats & ignores.

Can Mexico build a national care system covering care for children, people with disabilities, the elderly—and the caretakers themselves? This is a great piece by @carinzissis.bsky.social on a regional movement to revalue "care," one that could be yet another LatAm model the US can learn from.

Defund the Police never meant Defund the Police, which is why I don't think it was effective. But coverage rarely explained what it did mean (radically reorient policing through new institutions.) By contrast, when Trump says, "We will take Greenland," the media bends over backward to sanitize it.

I happen to think Defund the Police is not good messaging. (I'd have gone with Reimagine Policing.) And the pro-Palestine protests also suffered from messaging that fairly or unfairly got pinned on them. That said, it's revealing whose messaging gets the benefit of "translation" and whose doesn't.

Rather than a coup, might we think of this as a massive and voluntary transfer of power into private hands in a fashion likely to make recapturing that power difficult. In a traditional coup, powerholders resist the transfer. Here they have voluntarily signed the documents and bought the popcorn.

Cultivate the art of being alone. Solitude =/= loneliness if you figure out what to do with it. When making major life decisions, pretend you have $10mn in the bank. Hold others to high standards and yourself to higher ones. But be as kind to yourself as you are to others. Time heals a lot.

COUNCIL OF THE INSPECTORS GENERAL ON INTEGRITY AND EFFICIENCY
January 24, 2025
Mr. Sergio Gor
Director of Presidential Personnel
The White House
Dear Mr. Gor:
I am writing in response to your email sent to me and other Inspectors General earlier this evening wherein you informed each of us that "due to changing priorities, your position as Inspector General . .. is terminated, effective immediately."
As Chairperson of the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE), I recommend that you reach out to White House Counsel to discuss your intended course of action. At this point, we do not believe the actions taken are legally sufficient to dismiss Presidentially Appointed, Senate Confirmed Inspectors General.
Specifically, based upon the 2022 amendments to the Inspector General Act of 1978, the President must notify Congress 30 days prior to removal of an IG and provide "substantive rationale, including detailed and case-specific reasons" for such removal. 5 U.S.C. § 403(b), as amended by the section 5202(a) of the Securing Inspector General Independence Act of 2022 (Title LII, Subtitle A, of P.L. 117-263, 136 Stat. 2395, 3222). The requirement to provide the substantive rationale, including detailed and case specific reasons, was added to better enable Congress to engage on and respond to a proposed removal of an Inspector General in order to protect the independence of Inspectors General.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at Hannibal. Ware@sba.gov.
