Bur oaks wreathed by Virginia creeper in various stages of fall color. I don't like how Virginia creeper takes over like this but I do like its fall color against the oak bark.
A large bur oak with a large branch visible, wreathed by Virginia creeper that is various colors from green to red.Another bur oak with very rough bark and Virginia creeper growing up its trunk.

That's how they manufacture consent for the largest population of prisoners in the history of the world. So yes, abolish the death penalty. Fuck public executions. But also abolish the system that makes it possible, starting with the cop in your head.

Fun fact: Tesla went with a giant touchscreen instead of knobs for the Model 3 purely to save time and money. Knobs would have required spinning up a whole supply chain. The company spun it as a luxury feature and much of the industry followed suit. But it was always an inferior substitute.

I tried to explain user friction to a 23yo coworker one day and how Ive experienced its increase everywhere beyond websites...radio controls, tvs, digital interfaces on appliances, and I was trying to be technical, grounding it in web design theory but she said I sound old and against change.

This reminds me of the Amish-run donut stand in the flea market in Wilmington, DE with an old timey ticket dispenser. You walked up to it, pulled a lever, and took a ticket. Then they called your number and you ordered your donuts. Amazing donuts.

I like this article, but I have always been in circles that took Enya seriously I guess. Fun though to hear young artists be so inspired by her. "In the mid ’90s, she turned down an offer to score Titanic."

Love that taya miller got to see the dressing the galaxy book at the lucas museum. Very unsettled that she'd never seen the costume concept designs before? images I feel are woven into my brain cells like ive always seen them. Where are the kids getting their prequel info these days?

Saw a cute post on how Xena "wasnt just a show" it was serious esoteric spiritual teaching and i just think that is so funny 🤣. But Im open to the idea someone could learn something from it, it wasnt completely fluff. It had respectable self-respect.

the effects are nice and all but the most impressive thing about early ILM is that everybody made it out alive
The adventures of ILM continued in November 1976. Joe Viskocil and Bruce Logan were now helping Richard Edlund do explosions, eventually blowing up seven models in the Van Nuys facility. "We had one really glorious explosion of one of the TIE fighters," Viskocil says, "and Richard almost lost his ear." In the ILM editorial department there was another close call. "I used to take pieces of film I was working on and put them over my neck," Dykstra says. "Every once in a while, I'd screw up and put one of the pieces of the film that was around my neck into the Moviola—and almost cut my head off!" Upstairs, in a room with some fairly dilapidated couches, dailies of special effects shots began to be a regular occurrence. The attendees would offer their critiques, but would also begin to scratch themselves after a while (some ILMers were bringing in their flea-ridden dogs, who would sleep on the couches).

I saw the Betelgeuse Betelgeuse stage show last night, what a theater kid show. Very online, very liberal, really entertaining, I had fun. Needs a little bit of editing for length/fist pump song endings and the choregraphy needs a small upgrade. I liked it loads more than the movie.

Pen, watercolor, black & white charcoal pencil.

Another featured piece from the Spooky Pants book.

A man in a sweater stands with his hands on his hips looking out of a large window with the curtains open. Things aren’t looking good outside, reader. A massive winged demon is emerging from the clouds as dozens of little ghosts and bone demons rip through the sky. On the ground below we see townsfolk running through the grass. Our man in the window is in no mood for this. He lets us know, “Oh, I am in no mood for this.” His dog looks out the window as well, wagging its tail.

Fantasia (1940) inspired drawing. I think I could’ve gone a little heavier with the chaos outside but we’ll try again with fresh drawings this October. I like how the clouds turned out. Trying to balance my sloppy lines with more detail can be tricky but I think we achieved a good result.

Walked by Meryl Streep's husband's sculpture today on my way to look at trees. I recently learned it wasn't ever supposed to be a fountain or outdoors. But the woman who commissioned it tended to get whatever she wanted.

Alternative response programs, where mental health clinicians respond to 911 calls instead of police, have proliferated since George Floyd's murder. What does it take to do this work well?

At first I was like why is George wearing a track suit for greeting people on opening day and then I remembered he's just some guy. Mellody Hobson as always, demonstrating a sense of style that is completely inexplicable to me but immediately recognizable as hers. She's a fascinating person.
